An urban ecosystem is</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">different from other ecosystems in three ways.</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">Firstly, humans are the dominant organism,</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">not necessarily because there are more of them,</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">but because their activities affect almost every</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">other organism in the food webs within this</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">ecosystem. For example, a house is sprayed with</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">insecticide to kill cockroaches and other pests.</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">However, this poison also kills spiders and</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">predatory wasps which control many insect</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">populations.</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">Secondly, almost all the energy inputs in an</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">urban ecosystem come from other ecosystems.</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">Food, electricity and fossil fuels have to be</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">supplied to an urban ecosystem for its survival. It</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">is obvious how much your household relies on</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">external energy supplies when there is an</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">electrical blackout for a number of hours!</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">Thirdly, an urban ecoystem produces huge</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">amounts of wastes which are usually not</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">recycled. Unlike the matter cycle in Fig 8 on page</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">271, the matter is often taken outside the urban</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">ecosystem for decomposition. In addition, some</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">of the wastes in an urban ecoystem are toxic.
