Hi Ernie and fellows,

I would like to add in our discussion for LAMS improvement some ideas from a lot of the Greek LAMS Community members who believe that there is a need for a "Sequence Home page" before the user open it and a third level of organizations in Groups.

A. Sequence's Home Page
-----------------------

The Sequence Home page could includes four open objects/windows like:
1. Abstract/Introduction,
2. Objectives/Learning Outcomes,
3. A general Forum/Chat/Video Conference room
4. A Library of general resources

available independent but parallel to the sequence like support activities but outside of it.

A Sequence's Home Page could support only one or more sequences of learning activities.

B. Group - Subgroup - Section
--------------------------------

Another issue is the possibility for a 3rd level (Section) within subgroups.

For example:

School - Class - Group of students/Lesson
School - Class - Group of students/Teacher
Faculty - Department - Students/Year or Students/Lesson
Department - Course - Lesson

The members of a section belong to the previous Subgroup like the members of a subgroup belong to the members of the previous group.

A Subgroup and a Section could be duplicated (with its users)to create a new subgroup and a new section.

What do you think about it?

Hi Spyros,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I like the Sequence home idea. It will make LAMS look a bit more like an LMS though :-)

But I think we should at least explore it in 2.4+.

We must redesign the LAMS main page (the page you land after you login). Here's an idea that we have

It's still work in progress, but I think we should consider the sequence home page once we get to redesign this page too.

As for the 3rd level subgroup, I personally don't like it as it gets a bit too deep and increases the complexity of assigning roles and whose able to see what.

I don't think it will be a good idea to call a School as top level course though as we didn't design the permissions that way, for example, if a person has authoring rights for the School course that means that he/she will have authoring rights to *all* subgroups/departments/classes and that's not quite right.

Perhaps having one LAMS server for each school? There's ways to run several LAMS servers within the same JBoss server. That might be an option.

Thanks,

Ernie

Hi Spyros,

We will be introducing a new 'Lesson intro page' in 2.4.

So when you create a lesson, you can enable this feature that also include the description and an option to display the design picture.

See this development task:

http://bugs.lamsfoundation.org/browse/LDEV-2829

If you have any comments, please let us know soon.

Thanks,

Ernie

OK, Lesson introductions is now the last significant feature to be implemented for LAMS 2.4, so now we are beginning testing and just a few more dozen small fixes and we'll be ready to package LAMS 2.4 for installers/upgraders. :-)

You can test this feature in Shaun.

Great!

There's a few cosmetic improvements we need to do, but it is generally working well.

I must acknowledge Spyros Papadakis for suggesting this feature. It will indeed be very useful! :-)

Thanks,

Ernie

Hi Ernie,

It is really a good step.

Could you modify the description after the lesson has started?

Hi Spyros,

Could you modify the description after the lesson has started?

Not at the moment, but we will in 2.4.1. Only the teacher that initiated the lesson will be able to modify the description.

Additionally, I would like an option for learners to opt not to see this page any more, as you can imagine it can be tedious if you have to come back to the lesson several times.

Also, what you think if we add Progress information to this page as well. Would it be relevant?

As you might have seen in the Moodle2 integration we already display an intro page (in Moodle) which has some basic integration I added a "Completed 5 out of 10 activities" message. See red rectangle below:

Would something similar in the LAMS lesson intro would be helpful?

Thanks,

Ernie

Hi Ernie,

If the teacher that initiated the lesson will be able to modify the description is ok.

It could be used and to anounce something to learners.

I like and the lesson progress like sequences in Moodle.

Another idea is to have a space as a library (e.g. files with additional infomation for study) and a space for communication (e.g. a chat or a forum) like support activities.

The library could be used as additional - further information to the sequence and the communication as a space for metacognitive interaction after lesson completed.

Hi Spyros,

If the teacher that initiated the lesson will be able to modify the description is ok.

Yes, that will be the way we implement it.

If we implement this with an online HTML editors, then it will be fairly easy to add any type of links to a library, so that would fit the purpose quite well.

Regarding chat/forum... hmm... perhaps we can enable the instant messaging and presence for this page as well, so people can chat in it and see who's doing this at the same time.

Thanks for the feedback!

Ηi Ernie,

That is good news!

Yes the idea is that people who attend a lesson from distance would like to have a meta-communication outside of the lesson.

The teacher from the other side could see for example are who are online and attempt the lesson and to give some comments or to know how to manage the groups better later from the monitor side.

Thanks for the effort!
