Hi Ernie,

Search LAMS Central does not work!

1000+ sequences / 400 + with content in Greek Language!

I would like to remind the issue of classification of sequences in subjects

If we add a button like the button for Language (e.g. Maths, Science, Computer Science/ICT, Language, etc) it will help us to find all the sequences in a specific. subject and language.

Thanks,

Spyros

Hi Spyros,

Yeah, it's getting nasty!

There are so many sequences now and little order there. So getting to one is rather tricky.

I think you are right.

Enforcing some basic classification is a good idea, at least as basic way of finding/searching via broad areas.

So this is what I can do.

If you can give me a list of subjects, I can add them to the form people use when they upload a lesson and then we can get them to add the subject to their sequence there.

Once we have that, in the main page of LAMSCentral, I can add a drop down menu (similarly to what I've done with languages that would display the sequences by discipline

Would that work for you? Any other ideas?

Thanks

Ernie

Audience is one criterion/field/

Audience - levels in education
==============================
Νηπιαγωγείο / Kids-garden ((normally ages 4-5)
Δημοτικό / Elementary (normally ages 6-11)
Γυμνάσιο / High School (normally ages 12-14)

Classification by Subject
============================
In my opinion a drop down menu with some general subjects (main categories) like:

Language (National Language)
History
Literature
Mathematics
Science
Computer Science - ICT
Physical Education
Foreign Languages: Spanish, French, German, Irish, Welsh, Italian- etc.
Culture - Art Activities
Religous
Other

is a very good first step!

Alternative we could have difernet subgroups of subjects for :
-Primary Education
-Secondary Education
-Trietery Education

- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Maths
- Religous
- ESL (English as Second Language)
- FSL (French as Second Language)
- SSL (Spanish as Second Language)
- GSL (German as Second Language)
- Algebra
- Geometry
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Geography
- Computer Science / Programming
- ICT
- Music
- Art Activities
- Religous

Hi Spyros and all,

It's been years since I haven't code on the LAMS Community so I'm a bit rusty :-)

However, I did manage to put together something that would see the audience and the subject as two separate fields when uploading a sequence.

I took your list of audiences and subjects and added some that I found in Wikipedia under academic subjects.

Here's how it looks like:

Let me know if you think I'm going in the right track.

If so, I guess we also need to start looking at how we will search for these in lamscentral. Right?

Thanks

Ernie

Hi Ernie,

Go ahead!

This is a very good first step.

Religion (one item - delete the second one)

I think we need and an "Other" option for the Subject.

e.g. A sequence about Photography for informal learning.

Spyros

P.S.
If it is possible in the future we could add and an optional sub-audience [a pop-up menu (?)] per subject as I had suggested.

This is very good for K-12 Education to locate very specific sequences for each class per subject.

Hi Spyros,

OK, I've changed the UI a bit more so it looks a bit better and not too long

So now I need to code the backend. Hopefully this won't take long.

I think we also need to change the landing page for LAMSCentral. Currently it lists all the available public sequences.

Perhaps we should display a few ones, have a search option (google like search), advanced search (keywords, language, audience and subject) and a list all option?

Would that work?

Thanks

Hi Ernie,

Good job!

I think also we need to change the landing page for LAMSCentral. The last upload

A search option (google like search), Advanced search (keywords, language, audience and subject) and a list all option is ok.

But, what about Search LAMS Central? Google custom search does not work.

Thanks and regards.

Hi Spyros,

Yes, it seems that the Google Custom Search wasn't working as it was using an old API. I have upgraded it now, so please give it a try here:

Hi Spyros,

Ok, so I'm been working a good chunk of today on this and now it works for uploading sequences.

So when you upload a sequences, now you need to:

  • Put a better description of the sequence
  • Force to select at least one target audience (Kindergarden, K-12, etc.)
  • Select at least one item from the subject list

Also, I've been working on how to display this details in the sequence view as well as in the full list of lessons in LAMS Central.

And I think the best approach will be to have links on each subject so you can see the list of lessons that are related to them.

I'm sure there will be a lot of room for improvements and different ways we can slice the data a bit better.

So I'm looking forward for suggestions.

Thanks,

Ernie

Hi Ernie,

I agree the best approach will be to have links on each subject so you can see the list of lessons that are related to them.

Let's start with the first implementation and will see other improvements in the future.

I'm looking forward to try the new upload!

Thanks,

Hi Spyros,

I've just saw that you uploaded a sequence. Hope you liked the new way of doing it :-)

Yes, when I catch a break I'll be working on the pages that do the breakout based on subjects. I'll keep you informed.

Thanks!

How could you search for sequences selecting the language, the target audience and the subject?

Hi Ernie,

Congratulations, you're always such a great job.

I would like to propose one more field between the Audience and the Subject.

The field "Level" or "Class" with A B C D E F as options.

Could you please, add it?

This will be very usefully especially for people from Primary and Secondary Education.

Regards

Spyros
