Sequence: Reading for Understanding

Sequence Information
Sequence: Reading for Understanding
Description:
The purpose of the LAMS sequence is for students to evaluate their own reading for understanding or comprehension skills through a shared resource, multiple choice quizzes and online collaboration.  Students share a piece of writing, which is aimed at the UK’s Adult Core Curriculum Entry 3.  Essentially the information is in a poster format that contains and image and is a piece of informative writing.

The aim of the learning design is to be able to recognise informative writing; recognise and understand instructions; understand how the use of images can give meaning to writing; understand how different types of text can give meaning to writing and discuss with their group their thoughts and feeling about the poster.

The online collaboration and multiple choice quizzes give the students the opportunity to both learn from their peers as well as receive affirmation regarding their own thoughts about the text.  Also, the tutor is able to assess individual’s competencies without the need for more formal assessment methods. Students are asked to look closely at some of the text within the poster.  This text uses certain formatting for effect as well and an open-ended sentence.  Students are asked why these devices have been through a multiple-choice quiz.  Students are told to read the feedback for each question careful so that they can understand the correct answer for each question

Students are directed to look at the remaining text and make a note of anything they find interesting, such as layout, the sentences or any individual words using the LAMS note pad.  Students are instructed to save their work so that the monitor can look at each student’s entry after the session has finished.

Students are invited to join a forum and discuss the things they found interesting about the text.  Students are encouraged to make a note of the things that other members of the group found interesting but they did not.

    Good stuff

Hi Kristian, Thanks for sharing this sequence. It's actually quite good and I like the way you reuse the images across activities. In addition, you can change the name of the activities so they show a more significant name rather the original tool name (Noticeboard, Chat, Q&A). You can change this name in the Property Inspector in Author.
