Description:
The learning design aim s to provide students will the skills and confidence needed to use the Learning Resource Centre to find resources appropriate to them and their level of understanding.  The learning design is aimed at entry-level students with particular learning difficulties, and a reading level of Entry 2.  The sequence uses a lot of images for those who had a lower reading ability and the use of a large font for those with poor eye sight.

Outline of Activities

This screen introduces student to the sessions and explains the aims and objectives of the session.  These are:
* Learning about the LRC
* Finding resources in the LRC
* Finding resources in the Young Adult collection
Tool: Notice board
Students are asked to complete a survey about libraries in general.  This aims to assess whether students know what a library is and if they've ever used one before.  These questions also help to prepare the students for a quix about the college's library.

Students are asked to complete a short multiple choice regarding their knowledge of the college's LRC.  This aims to address any misconception they may have as well as empowering them with new information.

Students are congratulated on completing the first part of the sequence and informed that they will be going on to part two and what to expect.  A stop has been built into this part of the session to ensure that students start the second part of the sequence together.

Part two of the session is all about what the students like, what they are interested in and how they go about finding interesting materials.  The first thing that is established is for them to nominated 3 things they are interested in from a list.  Because the voting tool is used, students have the opportunity to see how other members of the group have voted.

Students are introduced to the idea that they can then search for rescores available on the three things they have expressed an interest in.

Students access the LRC's OPAC to search for materials.

Students are asked how easy they found using the web OPAC. A vote has been used here so that students can easily see how other members of their group have answered.

Students are asked if there were many resources about their chose area of interest.  A vote has been used here so that students can easily see how other members of their group have answered.

Students are not asked to pick from the same list as before one area that they would like to find out more about.  This is a different from the 3 chosen earlier.

Students are directed to research information about their new choice through the Internet. A stop has been built into this part of the session to ensure that students start the third part of the sequence together.

Students go on to chat with the group about:
what subject they searched for
what website they looked at
something interesting they found out
