This learning sequence encourages students to investigate and evaluate three pedagogies that could be used in the design of learning.  After an initial survey of the students understanding of the learning process they are presented with a basic introduction to three pedagogic approaches.  Students are then are asked to use the results of three website searches to further their research before being grouped and asked to prepare a group presentation using a Powerpoint template, which is provided.  An additional personal response will be given, which should be a short statement from each student.

Outline of Activities

1. Introduction of the session and an outline of the session's activities

2. Initial Survey of the students perception of the learning process as a means of identifying their basic understanding of the role of teacher and student in learning

3. Basic Introduction to the three pedagogies using three different resources (word document, pdf document and a website),  each resource giving a perspective on one of the pedagogies.

4. Research Resources which are the results of three Google searches on the three pedagogies.  Students are expexted to use the results to further their research into the three approaches.

5. Grouping of the cohort into 5 groups

6. Group Response instructions to the presentation

7. Powerpoint presentation that each group will give to the rest of the students.  A template is provided that will enable each group to produce a consistent style of presentation.  The presentation can be made by any one or all the members of a group.

10. Final Survey of the student's perception of the three pedagogic approaches to learning design after experiencing one of the approaches.

Options:

The presentation can be made into an individual assignment where research can extend beyond the resources found on the web, i.e. journals, books and any other material that is relevant.  In addition to the presentation a report detailing the rationale behind the presentation's content and identifying the background research carried out.

An extension to the assignment could be the design of a learning session using one of the pedagogic approaches, justifying the choice.
