Description:

This lesson stretches over more than one class and takes the students through the ideas of energy use in our lives and how energy is a resource that can be conserved. Students first reflect on what energy is, and then do some reading about energy sources. They are grouped to answer seperate questions about energy before they think about how they use it in their own home by doing a survey of energy use (either a paper version or online. Students look at an animation of an energy efficient home to learn about energy conservation. This is based on the first 2 activities from the South Australian DECS Adopt/Adapt/Share topic. Outline of Activities:
1. Introduction of the topic. (noticeboard)
2. Students are asked what their preferred energy is and why. (survey)
3. Students are grouped into 3 groups. (grouping)
4. Students choose to answer a question that corresponds to their group number. (3Q&As - optional activities)
5. Students are given a website resource on energy. (share resources)
6. Students are asked to answer a more detailed version of the previous question in a forum and are encouraged to read the responses from other groups. (forum)
7. Students are asked to copy their favourite forum responses into a notebook. (notebook)
8. They are asked about the most important energy use in the home. (Q&A)
9. Students complete a survey about energy use and conservation around their home. This can be done as homework on-line or the survey printed out and completed on paper and re-entered when a computer is available.(survey)
10. A message incouraging the the teacher and students to discuss the survey results in class face to face. (noticeboard)
11. A website with an interactive animation is used to show ways that energy can be conserved around the home.
