I have double checked the username, password, and xmppdomain and I still get this error:

Couldn't connect. Please try again...
Code: 401
Type: auth
Condition: not-authorized

in the chat window.

I see this in the lams log

Hi Dave,

Are you using Wildfire 2.6.2?

Have a look at this page:

http://wiki.lamsfoundation.org/display/lamsdocs/Installing+Wildfire+for+LAMS

Thanks,

Ernie

I have 2.6.2 as recommended in the intsall documentation.

I read this http://wiki.lamsfoundation.org/display/lamsdocs/Installing+Wildfire+for+LAMS

and it states you might get that error if you have 3.x.

Note I installed the 2.6.2 tarball on Solaris. It otherwise seems to work OK. I logged into the admin consolse and it says version 2.6.2 also. I double checked the username and password again today.

I figured this out.

Orginally I tried to open a chat activity in an active lesson but we did not have wildfire installed at all!

So that chat activity would never work.

I went and started a new lamsv2 activity in Moodle using the same sequence and the chat works!

This is basically the same as "Jabber Server Chat Rooms Don't Match LAMS - Changing Jabber Server Breaks Existing Chat Sessions"
