I have been requesting that LAMS gets installed and integrated with our SharePoint Portal...... it looks like this will work well and be a great addition to our creation of learning objects. Finally we are about to make a start on this as we have now completed lots of upgrades and patches to Scholaris.

My Director of ICT however, will not install if we must use MySQL ...she wants to use our MS SQL.

Is this going to be possible? Are there any config issues we'll need to watch out for?

Has anyone done this?

I'd love to know if anyone has had a go at this.

The main problem we can foresee is that code to actually create the database initially is quite different in MS SQL as it is to MySQL.

We've tried to create a "database neutral" system, the initial definition of the database tends to have to be tweaked from database to database, as there is so much stuff that is different across databases.

So while we should be able change a setting in LAMS itself to say "use MS SQL" syntax once LAMS is running (and we've never tried it so I'll say should rather than can), getting LAMS set up in the first place is harder.

This applies to both creating the database initially and to a lesser extend applies when we doing the upgrades for LAMS.

I'm not saying this is impossible - I'm just saying off the top of my head that's the first major problem I know you will run into if you try it.

This is not the reply I was hoping for. I doubt I'll get it running in these circumstances. Pity really, I would have thought that anyone with SharePoint would also have MS SQL and not want to have another dB in the system. I fully understand why you have used mySQL.

But having just read this statement on your tech questions site
"In the future, we aim to provide support for other databases as well as part of the development for LAMS 2.0"

I'm hopeful we can work together to get a solution.

As usual, its all a matter of getting it to fit in the big picture.

Right now, I'm still recovering from getting LAMS 2.1 out, and some folks who might be interested in this topic could be away for the conference, so I'm sure there will be further talk on this subject, even if it isn't today.

But I'd love to hear from anyone else out there who has an interest in this topic.
