I've done this before in one of our demo sites, but I can't remember which template file I add the analytics code to

If you just want to add it to the front page, then you can just login as sysadmin, go to sysadmin menu, then "Maintain login page", turn the html editor to just plain HTML, add the Google analytics code at the end. Again, that will only give you the front page.
