This is a tough one, as it looks like it requires certain conditions (I'm not so sure what) to occur, and I can't reproduce it. Can you try these things:

Go to SysAdmin->Cache Management, and click Remove (this'll clear the software cache), then try to edit/create your subgroup

Restart LAMS, then try to edit/create your subgroup

If neither of these work, it'd be good if we could see your logs, with hibernate logging set to debug - please let us know if you want to do this and I'll send you instructions.
