Description:
Basic Description
The intention of this learning design is for student to have the opportunity to:
* reflect on what learning is
* discuss why students learn
* explore their attitudes to learning and success
* explore their experiences of learning
* identify what is good learning.

The learning design relies on student reflection and them sharing their thoughts and ideas with their peers.  The sequence also aims to focus students' on the positive attitude to learning encouraging students to think about how, when and where they learn best.

Outline of Activities
Introduction and welcome to the session.  This outlines the aims and objective of the session.
Tool: Notice board

Student access a PowerPoint presentation that show people in different learning situations.  These include traditional classroom based environment as well as work based environments and informal learning environments.  These images are intended to reinforce the positive aspects of education and training.

Students are invited to share examples from the presentation that they feel represents good learning.

Students are given a quick questionnaire that encourages them to think about what motivated them to learn and asks them directly to answer the question 'I learn because......'  This questions helps students to focus on learning as an activity what their attitude towards it is.

After students have had time to reflect on what motivates them to learn they are then asked to complete the following:
* I find learning hard when...
* I don't enjoy learning when...
* I find learning easy when...
* I enjoy learning when...
These questions not only make students focus on learning in general but also make them focus on the positive aspects on learning, asking them to focus on when they enjoy learning and find it easy.

To follow on from this students are questions as to how and when they learn best; for example, at home or in college.

Students are instructed to access a flash based interaction.  This interaction asks students to rearrange a poem into its correct order.  This piece of text aims the reaffirm positive attitudes towards learning.  The use of the interactive element makes it more likely that students will read the text carefully, thus enabling them to re-order it correctly.
