Hi

Im a new user, just discovered Lams yesterday. I would consider myself fairly competent with IT but i have to say so far I have found LAMS to be over complicated. I have just tried to download a version there and im getting an My Sql error message I have no idea what to do with that. Do i need to install that database on my computer?
Also I signed up to the DEMO server as that seemed to be the only option available to new users, when i tried to create a lesson in 'Demo group C' the next button would not work.
The pdf doc which explains the service to new users does not contain any information on Installion and setting up a user account.

I guess my question is, how do i set up and start using LAMS as seen in the video tutorials and do I need to download the MYSQL database?

Hi Peter,

The windows installer wiki page goes through the required software and the steps of the installer, it's at http://wiki.lamsfoundation.org/display/lamsdocs/Windows+Installer+Help. Yes, MySQL needs to be installed beforehand, it must be downloaded separately. The wiki link above has links to the MySQL downloads and installation instructions web pages.

It would be simpler if we could bundle all the required software into a single installer, but some licensing restrictions prevent that. It's fairly common though for web applications (e.g. Wordpress, Moodle, etc) to be installed along with a supporting database or web server (MySQL, Apache, IIS).

Re: the next button not working on the demo server, I assume this is the Add Lesson wizard? I think the problem might be the large number of users in 'Demo group C' - the wizard loads all the potential monitors and learners, which can slow down the wizard if there are a large number. All you can do is be patient and let it complete its loading - but what I'll probably do is start a new group on the demo server for now if this group is too big.

Thats great, thanks for that, I will check out that wiki page. Hopefully everything will run smoothly after that. Looking forward to using it.
