I am currently working on the development of LAMS sequences for K-6 students in the areas of HSIE and Science and Technology. If anyone has a topic from the current syllabus documents that they would like to run this term post me a reply stating the topic of the unit and stage group and I will develop these sequences and put them into the K-12 group.

Thanks so much for this offer Karen. Hopefully now that teachers are back to school again there will be a lot more file sharing!

Hi Karen (May),

I noticed that you used the notebook tool a lot in your "6 thinking hats' sequence. I am interested to know why you use this tool and not the Q&A tool. Is this becuase you feel that the younger students would find it too hard to be reading everyone else's answers?

Maybe there is something about that tool that I haven't learned yet! It's funny how you get into the habit of using your favourite tools. This is why seeing how other people do their sequences is so fascinating.

Bronwen

PS: Your sequence was great! :-)

Dear Bronwen,
The 6 thinking hats sequence was delivered as a whole class lesson when I did it using the Smartboard as this was the 1st time my little ones had been introduced to de Bono. We made our decision about answers as a whole class and then I typed them in. The sequence on the community site I modified slightly so it could be done individually.
I find notebook useful for modelled lessons as the group are able jot down collective ideas then discuss and decide which one we feel best answer the question etc. It is great for the little ones while they are sorting out the thinking process and encourages them to not just answer with the first thing they think of but then to analysis and evaluate (in their way) the answer they think is best.
Thanks for the feedback
Cheers
Karen

Hi Karen May,

I love the celebrations sequence you've uploaded in the sequence repository. This should be heaps of fun to complete. I particularly like the task to make their own invitation to a celebration. Have you run the sequence yet? Let us know how the kids found it.

I am currently working on a sequence about fitness for Primary school kids. It is currently a mix of fitness knowledge tasks combined with running around the class room looking for certain objects.

I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for an activity that either stimulates thought about exercise or even a task that can be done in a class room environment as I am not so sure what is a realistic expectation for year 5/6 in terms of fitness knowledge and/or if running tasks in classrooms should be avoided.

So far I have

1 multiple choice activity about fitness and exercise
2 go and fetch an particular object activities,
1 search the web for a sight about kids exercise and report the name of it.
1 Q&A activity about what sorts of unorganised activities kids can do

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks

Hi Bronwen,
For teachers who have access to a Smartboard there is a giant stop watch that you can run through the Smartboard Tools in the Maths section of the tool box. A great activity would be to have the students do step ups on a small aerobics block or a Kindergarten chair would be ideal for Year 6 kids, just the right height. You can set the timer to count down (and it comes with audio alarm) to see how many step ups they can complete in a minute. This could also be used for knee bends etc.
There are OH&S guidelines that would restrict students from running around inside a classroom in DET schools. You could do it but you would have to do a risk assessment first. (Lots of paperwork!)
Would it be possible to import a flash file with simple images demonstrating bending and stretching activities then have the students answer some questions about which are safe exercise practices and which are not.
I'd love to see the finished product, sounds great!
Cheers

Hi Karen,

Thanks for the feedback. I was beginning to doubt the intelligence of getting overly excited pupils jumping up and running around a classroom full of computers, tripping over chairs etc...

The idea of doing some jumps or step-ups close to where they are seems much easier to control.

I will try to fit that in.

Also, I like the idea of thinking about safe ways to exercise. I might create a quiz for that.

Thanks again
