Today I ran a LAMS presentation using a wireless router and audience participation using their wireless laptops - it worked well. For a full report, see this post in HE

Nice one, James. Out of curiosity, how many "students" did you have in the audience and what is the spec of your laptop?

We had six students running - it wasn't a big presentation, and not everyone had laptops.

I would be interesting to test the practical limits of this - I've heard of 25-30 working before some start to drop out. When we have a spare moment, it would be useful for us to try out the LAMS test harness on some typically configured current laptops to see what they can handle.

...as for Ernie's bargain hunting, glad to hear the price has come down - I think my current router was bought 6-12 months ago...

I think this sounds like a great option for small group stuff. Some teachers may even find that they can do this in a larger class, but have it so that pupils rotate in the class around different activities - including a LAMS sequence.

For example, I have thought up a school science sequence where half the class is doing some hands on activity in the lab, while the other half is working online and doing some research on the topic. The class then swaps half-way through the lesson

This would save a keen teacher some of the red tape required to set up LAMS on the school server (if there is one). They still need to find the laptops of course!

Wireless is dirty cheap these days. You can have the router that James was talking about for $50 US on Amazon. That's a third of what James got if for ;-)

A question for the LAMS techos: When can we use LAMS on a PDA? How far away is that?
