Hi all,

Has anyone successfully got LAMS 2.0 and Moodle integrated on two separate servers and if so, how easy is it to do?

We have a problem at our institution in the fact that we have Moodle running on MySQL 4.x and LAMS 2.0 requiring MySQL 5. Although we could upgrade the MySQL I suppose, this would be better left until we upgrade our installation of Moodle (we're currently running 1.6.4 and I guess we'll wait until a stable 1.8).

So, we're toying with the idea of installing LAMS 2.0 on one server, and making it work with Moodle on the other one. I'm guessing that both will run quicker independently, but I've no idea how quick the integration will be (but the way the integration works, I reckon it'll be fine - it's not as if they are sending packets back and forth continuously).

I know there are instructions on the LAMS wiki, but I'm just canvassing. I also saw the fact that LAMS and Moodle on different servers would need to both be on port 80 to talk. How easy is it to get LAMS 2.0 to work on port 80? I did try with LAMS 1.0, managed it, but it was a lot slower.

I don't know if this would count, but I have and several times ;-)

It's actually much more easy now that it was with 1.0.2, as now we have an interface to do it all and you don't need to fiddle with the database anymore.

Also, we have added a validation step so you can verify that there's connectivity between the two servers.

That's right, the communication between the two systems as such is minimal. Just a few webservices call from Moodle to LAMS and a callback from LAMS to Moodle when it needs to retrieve users data, which both of them go over http so no problems with open special ports, etc.

Easy peacy.

If you are using the Windows installer, that's one of the options while you are installing it. If you are installing it on Unix, there's only one file you need to modify to set the port you want to use. I can't remember the file, but let me know if you need to know.

Just adding a bit more to this. One of the very cool things that LAMS 1.0.2 and 2.0 allow you to do when integrating it with different LMSs is that you can have only *one* LAMS server and have it integrated with as many other Moodle, Blackboard, Sakai, .LRN, WebCT servers as you want.

That means one LAMS server can treat several LMS as if they would have their own LAMS instance and users from one server won't interfere with another integrated server.

For instance here at Macquarie University, there are a couple of departments that run their own Moodle servers and we provide them with LAMS2 for their servers. So they only need to maintain their Moodle server and don't worry to manage the LAMS server, which we do it for them. Also since we have to maintain only one server is quite simple on our side as well.
