Is there a way to fix the problem where all the internal links in lams use fully qualified URLs instead of relative URLs?

This seems to greatly complicate the install and use of LAMS.

Is there a way to disable this behavior?

I am trying to setup a VMWare virtual machine with LAMS to be distributed and I am not sure it will be possible to predict the hostname that will be assigned to the virtual machine.

Not really, all links use the ServerURL config parameter to construct absolute links. One of the reasons why was to make the links to the flash swfs behave in an expected way (due to javascript security features there were problems when the url domain didn't match the domain used by the browser). Another reason is that RAMS (which was based on LAMS) changed the /lams bit to /rams - having one authoritative parameter made this easier. Having lams accessed by one domain also makes certain that access log statistics belong to one domain and not other virtual hosts.

I think it's a feature rather than a problem...

In this case the Server URL would have to be set when the virtual machine is started in its final location. This could be done by the sysadmin when they first login, which they'd normally do anyway - to setup initial user accounts, email server, groups, etc.
