G'day Barry,

Great to have you asking interesting questions... please keep them coming!

Ok, so as of today this is what I would do:

Say we have 30 people and what we want is to split them in groups of 6 student each to create 5 groups. Then each group would go and read a bunch of resources we have set for them to do and then discuss them in a Chat&Scribe activity where the Scribe would take notes and then create a document that he/she then would submit (as team leader) in a shared resources activity.

So first activity: Grouping activity set to groups of 6 students (randomly assigned as they come along into the lesson

2nd activity: Shared resources with the stuff you want them to read.

3rd activity: Chat&Scribe (or Forum&scribe if you want) (grouped activity as defined in 1st grouping).

4th activity: Grouping activity with Grouping type chosen (so the teacher would pick the individuals for each group)

5th and final activity: Submit files (grouped activity as defined in 2nd grouping defined in the 4th activity).

How would this work for the students:

All students will hit the first activity and get put in their respective groups.

They all read the materials

Have a chat & scribe where they chat about the content and draw their conclusions. The scribe for each groups works on writing the groups output.

Then when students hit the next grouping activity, the teacher will assign to groups *only* those individuals that are team leaders (one per each group). Then, these team leader will go to the next Submit activity to send their group reports.

Note that students that aren't groups in activity 4th, they won't be able to go thru... so effectively only the team leader gets to submit the group output.

Is this what you are after?

Thanks,

Ernie

yes. this is a good work-around. cheers.

I'll have a bit of a play to see what I can do with this being in the _middle_ of a sequence ( i.e: more team work afterwards) - just for giggles. At the moment it's no biggie if the "more work" is another sequence afterwards. the trick will be keeping groups together.

a last (hypothetical) question, if I can?

> "Ok, so as of today this is what I would do:"

you're referring to using 2.0 while anticipating branching in 2.1, yes?

how *would* you envisage doing the same thing in 2.1?

Additionally, do you see/guess branching to be available depending on, say, role (as in actor in a play) or status (team leader)?

talk about "Pandoras Box" ...

many thanx

Correct.

Branching all the way :-)

I see you are grasping the wonders of branching ;-)

Indeed, I would use branching to send all the other students in one branch to the next activities while sending the team leaders into intermediate activities before they merge at the end... see the attached picture (taken from the branching documentation).

Thanks,

Ernie

I want to work a problem in groups. So, I am doing grouping first and then all my activities modified by this grouping activity, but....
what does it mean applying grouping to submit file? Can I make that a group could submit a file as a group and not as an individual person?
How come?

* Additionally, do you see/guess branching to be available depending on, say, role (as in actor in a play) or status
> (team leader)?*

Is that possible? Is it possible to branch depending on a role (for ex, the scriba of the group?)?? It's just what I need! But I don't know how!

Thanks,

Sandra

Hi Sandra,

> what does it mean applying grouping to submit file?

In the case of Submit file, no it really doesn't make a lot of sense.

> Can I make that a group could submit a file as a group and not as an individual person?

You can do this by using activities like Chat & Scribe or Forum & Scribe are for. You can get a team to discuss a particular subject and get them to submit a report or document as group... and you can also apply groupings to them.

> Is it possible to branch depending on a role (for ex, the scriba of the group?)?

Not automatically. However, you could create a student selected group in which you ask the students to group in scribes and not-scribes. Or a teacher selected one in which you group these two manually.

Thanks,

Hi Ernie,

I need to make one thing clear:

> Can I make that a group could submit a file as a group and not as an individual person?

>You can do this by using activities like Chat & Scribe or Forum & Scribe are for. You can get a team to discuss a particular subject and get them to submit a report or document as group... and you can also apply groupings to them.

I want that the group submit a file as a group. You mean that with Forum & Scribe, the scribe can upload a file?!Where? Because I can only see a text box and I don't know how I can give the chance to upload a file to the scribe of the group.

Thanks

Sorry, you are correct. The scribe cannot submit a file but rather a report using the text area.

If you *really* need the scribe to submit a file on behalf of the group, you can put a branching activity and inside one activity-less branch and one branch only for the scribes. You can choose Teacher selected branching so the teacher assigns the scribe to the branch so they can submit their papers on behalf of the team.

Not the most elegant of all sequences, but it works :-)

See images attached.

Thanks
