Hi
I've installed LAMS on our MS Server 2007,and signed on as Admin, and all ran okay. Created a chat and tested that okay

However when I go to my client pc (XP) I can get the LAMS 'splash' screen, but as soon as control passes to the server I get a DNS error. The URL is "http://localhost:8080/lams/",
the error is "Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer "

We are running ISA so I suspect that port 8080 may be blocked?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated

thanks
Owen

Owen,

The address "http://localhost:8080/lams/" will only work on the PC that is running LAMS - in your case this is the MS Server. "localhost" is a special name that points Internet Explorer (and other software) to your local PC - in other words the one you are sitting in front of.

From your client PC, you will need to use the address of the LAMS server using its name or IP address e.g. http://ourserver.somewhere.edu.au:8080/lams/ or http://192.168.1.250:8080/lams/

When you have worked out the correct address, you need to
* log in as sysadmin in LAMS (either on the server or or your client PC)
* go to the Sys Admin menu (the link is on the top right hand corner)
* select "Edit Configuration Settings"
* change "ServerURL" to be the address that you use on the client PC.
* log out from LAMS and log in again.

There are a few spots in LAMS where the ServerURL setting is used to get bits of the pages, and if you don't have the ServerURL setting correct, then LAMS won't work 100%.

Try all this first. If it doesn't work, then you need to check if port 8080 is blocked.

Does that make sense?

Hi Fiona

Thanks for the help.

However when I go into LAMS via our server, I get the "Welsome System Admin " screen and only have 4 choices, Author, Monitor, Admin, Learner.
When I choose the Admin, I can then choose 'sys admin'
but there are no settings that mention changing the server options.

Is there another logon I should be using here?

thanks
OWen

Owen,

Which version of LAMS are you running? LAMS 1.0.x or LAMS 2.0?

My instructions were for LAMS 2.0, but it sounds like you are running 1.0.x. If you are running 1.0, then you don't need to change the server options - that's a 2.0 thing.

I've attached a screenshot of LAMS 2.0 - if it looks different to that then you are probably running 1.0.x
