Do you have mysql installed? If so, do you know the root password for it? Does it have the Java JDK installed?

Can I assume you are familiar with linux's shell? If so:

Once you get access to the SSH shell, you need to:

cd /tmp
# download JBoss
wget http://softlayer.dl.sourceforge.net/project/jboss/JBoss/JBoss-4.0.2/jboss-4.0.2.tar.gz
# download LAMS
wget http://lamscommunity.org/2.3/stable/unix/lams-unix-installer-2.3.5.tar.gz
# untar JBoss to your own home directory
cd ~
tar xvzf /tmp/jboss-4.0.2.tar.gz
# untar LAMS
tar xvzf lams-unix-installer-2.3.5.tar.gz
cd lams-unix-installer-2.3.5


and have a look at the readme file and configure the lams.properties accordingly.

One more quick question - I have the company website installed on this server too. Is this going to allow me to make sure it doesn't nuke that installation? Can I have LAMS installed in a subdirectory (for example, I have moodle in org.au/moodle because joomla is in org.au/) - does that make sense?

I just don't want to overwrite what I already have installed.

Unfortunately I've never used CPanel and have some vague idea how it works, so really can't tell you how this works or even more, how LAMS can be installed with it.

I can't even login to SSH with PuTTy. I have the cPanel password and I have set up a Public/Private key which I downloaded in PPK format.. and the server doesn't like my key.. Doesn't like my username..It just doesn't like me..lol..

I'd love to use LAMS because it looks and works (from the demo site at least) so much better than moodle. Moodle is clunky and ugly and not intuitive at all.

Not to be I guess.

Can't afford to use a hosted solution.. so I guess that is that..

Would something like lessonlams.com would work for you?

It's a LAMS with a very easy to use interface and tailored to get up and running without all the admin/setup hassle. It's also free for classes up to 30 students.
