I got the MEL LAMS VM started and can access moodle via the browser. I have many questions but I'll try and stay focused.

1. VMWare Player cmd panel: how do you create a user and password or should one continue to use root and MELr%t?

2. To what extent should one become acquainted with this cmd panel and what can one do with it?

3. How can one access the moodle class directly folders so as to dump into a created course already available folders with content, etc.

4. Is is practical, ideal...recommended, etc., to have the VMWare VM open up MEL LAMS from a portable medial server hard drive, connect it to the school's network, open it up and have students access courses? Would it be fast enough if a class full of students have to access it (30 students at a time or so...)?

...enough for now...

Hi,

To effectively use the MEL Appliance VM you really do need some experience maintaining a Linux operating system.

Here is information on adding a command line user under Linux. http://www.linuxheadquarters.com/howto/basic/adduser.shtml

There is an existing user called mel that should have access to the Moodle, Elgg, Lams applications. If you are logged in as root you can use the command

su - mel

to login as mel.

For moodle, you can use the backup feature (see: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Course_backup ) to save the contents of a course. Then you can restore to add the items to the moodle course (see: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Restore ).

You should be able to run the VM from a portable drive. 30 students at a time should not be a problem.
