Hi everyone,

Thanks to all who have been translating LAMS 2.0 modules, now we have 14 active languages and more than 4110 translations have taken place, in just about a week! Woow!

LAMS Authoring is almost fully translated to all 14 active languages. So here are some pictures of them:

Chinese
Spanish
Italian
Norwegian
German
French
Portuguese
Swedish
Polish
Korean

Bulgarian Missing screenshot but completed (coming shortly)

As you can see in the pictures, it looks quite nice :-)

Now notice that the name of the tools aren't in the translated languages (Tools in the tool library). That's because LAMS 2.0 architecture: tools are completly separated from LAMS core.

Once these tools are translated they will display their names on the choosen language.

Some of them are being translated (Forum, Q&A, MCQ, Submit Files and Noticeboard) as well. As soon as we can, we'll add those translation to their respective tools as well.

Once again, a big thank you to all the translators... we shall put more modules to translate on the first week of May (Chat, Share Resources, Voting, Grouping).

Thanks,

Ernie

G'day everyone,

We have allocated a server for the translators so they can test their translations in a real LAMS2.0 server. That is aim to give them a bit more context of the translating phrases/words.

A comment general comment we've been getting from the translators is that some of the buttons in the Flash interfaces are not wide enough to display the word in a particular language (see here or here for examples.

We are aware of this problem and we are fixing this by automatically resizing the buttons according to the length of the label. However, this is quite a time consuming task as we need to review every button. This will be sorted out for the final 2.0 release though.

If the translators have more feedback, please post it in this thread so everyone can follow the comments and we avoid repetition.

Thanks,

Ernie

3: Translators FAQ: "Why does it should that there are missing labels to translate? I finished this module yesterday 100%!"
In response to 1 06/29/06 02:08 AM
[ Reply | Forward ]
Fellow translators,

Some of you have been asking why once you completely translated a module, usually the next day when you come back, the same module shows that are some labels still missing translation.

Well, that's because we have added new labels to the module that require translation.

I know, I know, it ain't fair that it said you were finished and now you are not. But it is usually in the later stages of development that we find that new tags/label/phrases have to be added to show more info or help about a particular feature and therefore we add them.

Once the modules get up in the internationalization site, they are pretty final. So we only add a handful if we need to.

At any rate, our apologies in advance and thank you for your patience :-)

Thanks,

Ernie

Dear translators,

As mentioned earlier, today Friday, we have updated all the translations to the latest LAMS 2.0 beta1 release.

We have also changed the layout/design to the latest 2.0 beta1 for most of the Authoring and Monitor pages so next time you login to the translation server, you will have a chance to see the new design (much much nicer if you ask me!)

Hats off to the Greek translators that managed to translate *all* modules in just a matter of days!! Also to Prof. Jong-Dae Park for his complete translation to Korean :-)

All feedback and comments regarding the translations please post them her.

Next Friday July 7th, we'll update the translation with the latests again.

Thank you all fellows for your great work on this. Really appreciate it

Ernie

Hi Elani,

Yes, we are aware of it and are trying to figure out a way to fix it. It seems this occurs when your browser is set up to a default locale other that English or the encoding is other that English. We are looking into it.

The way we would like to fix this is by preseting the login page as per the default language set for the system.

This *only* happens with the login page. But once you login, notice that you see everything as the appropriate language you have been set to see/have.

> 2. The Menu file in Greek, has some missing choices and

These are missing labels that we haven't added to the translating site by mistake. We'll make sure our labels are syncronize shortly.

Thanks,

Ernie

G'day translators,

Just to let you know that I have updated the latest translations to the latest LAMS 2.0 on Friday. Also for Greek all the ? in Author should now be gone.

Another interesting thing we have realized last week while testing the languages is that we need to have all the Flash interfaces translated first in order for you to test *all* lams-core modules.

So if you are translating modules, my suggestion would be to translate the Flash Modules first:

* Author
* Add Lesson Wizard
* LAMS Monitor
* Learner (Flash)

Once these are translated, then you can use most of the LAMS core interfaces without a problem.

Thanks,

Ernie

G'day Translating fellas,

I have added all the latest translations to the transalations site. Now we have a full Norwegian translation. Thanks Erik for that.

Also, this morning I have added a new labels for Authoring, Monitor, Learner and MCQ. Most of them are for the tooltips (little anotation that come when you rollover a button or a function to provide contextual help).

Two tools coming probably towards the end of the week or early next week: Voting and Notebook.

After these two... only one more tool to go!! (Scribe).

Thanks,

Ernie

Hi there translators,

We have realized that we are missing the actual names of the languages and locales we use in the translation site in their original form. For instance, we've been calling Español in its English form: Spanish.

Therefore we would like to get your help to get the names right. So here's the questions:

Can you please confirm if the language name in your original language is correct according to the list below?

German: Deutsch
Spanish: Español
French: Français
Italian: Italiano
Korean: 한국어
Maori: Māori
Dutch: Nederlands
Portuguese: Português - Brasil
Bulgarian: Български
Chinese: 简体中文
Norwegian: Norsk
Swedish: Svenska
Polish: Polski
Hungarian: Magyar
Greek: Ελληνικά

We don't have any translation for:

Welsh
Thai

If your language is not properly written, could you please post the proper language name in this thread?

Thanks very much in advance

Ernie

16: Introducing Localization to LAMSv2.0
In response to 1 08/20/06 11:40 PM
[ Reply | Forward ]
Hi Translators,

As part of the work in internationalizing LAMS, we have now added localization (or i10n in short).

For the past few months, you've been translating all the labels on each screen on LAMS to all 19 languages. These labels you translate are the actual words or phrases in the screen.

However, i10n is concern with data formats. For instance, in different countries the dates are presented very differently: in Chinese a date is usually presented as 2006-08-21, in Spain: 21/08/2006. Another example the numeral expression in certain countries like India or Japan.

i18n takes care of all this for us.

However, if we want to get the data formated in a particular localization, we need to provide a country.

Therefore, in our internationalization site, we have now added a country to all our 19 translations. So when a person using the English translation but with Australia as country code, it will get dates formated as "21 August 2006" and another one using English (American) will get "August 21, 2006".

But you might be wondering "...and how does this affect my translation work?". The good news is: it doesn't at all :-) So just keep doing your translation work as usual, but be aware of the country label now next to the language.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask here.

Thanks,

Ernie

Dear translators,

We have just updated the latest translations for the week to our translations site, so you are welcome to continue the testing. This week alone we have had more than 6700+ labels translated!

As I mentioned last week, Dr. Abdel-Elah Al-Ayyoub has translated almost all LAMS to Arabic. I have attached a few pictures for you to see. It looks really really nice! Thanks Dr Al-Ayyoub for your efforts.

Another important announcement for this week regarding translations was the implementation of localization (i10n) in LAMS. Now all languages also have a country that will be used to present date and numbers according to the usage on those countries. So now LAMS does support both internationalization and localization! :-)

Hi Translators,

I forgot to mention a new feature in that we have added to the translation site in my last update, so here we go:

Additionally to the Bulk Translate option, now you can Bulk translate only the missing labels. So instead of having to click each label one by one, you get a list of all the labels that are missing translation and just translate those (see attached picture

This will prevent teams of translators to step in eachothers translations and hopefully make the process a bit easier now.

Comments and suggestions to improve this welcome.

Thanks,

Ernie

G'day Translators,

Now we have upgraded the latest translations to the translation server so you should be able to check it out there.

Some of you have been emailing me about getting automatic notifications when a new label gets added, so we'll be implementing a daily notification email service, that once you sign up, you'll get a daily email if new labels get added so you can translate them straight away. This will make it easier for you, because you don't have to come back to the i18n site every now and then to check for new labels.

Given that we are doing this, I was wondering if you would be interested to get another type of notifications regarding the translations. For instance, would it be useful to get a summary of the latest translations for your language as well? (I guess this will be handy when you and others are working on the translation as a team). Any other suggestions?

Ok, for this week, this is the summary:

G'Day Translators,

We have a few new features added to LAMS 2.0 this week. There's new Authoring layouts for all tools (except MCQ, Q&A and Vote -we'll have those done in the following weeks). As you can see in the translators website, these new changes make the interface more intuitive and less confusing. In addition, note that you can add files, pictures, movies, etc using the HTML editor by uploading them directly into it. All the content you upload as part of your sequence, *will* go with your sequence when you export it, so this will make the sequence sharing and reusability much easier!

Now you will also see that most Activities have a "Reflective" option in the Advanced Tab (while Authoring). If selected, this option allows the teacher to ask the learners to reflect about about the activity they have completed. These reflections by all the learners can be viewed by the teacher in Monitor. This is quite a powerful feature for certain pedagogical approaches.

Also you'll be able to note a new addition to the internationalization site (see attached picture). Once you login, you'll see the over all progress of your translation language as well as a link that will show you the latest added labels (if any). Hopefully this will make your work easier. If you have comments or suggestion on how to improve this, let me know.

We are now less than a month for release! :-) Woohoo, this feels good!! So take this into account for your translations as well!

A really cool thing to mention regarding the translations this week is that Adam Stecyk from Poland has come to work at Macquarie University for another project (not LAMS) but he'll be working with us in the Polish translations as well as exploring ways of LAMS usage in Poland. Adam and I met this week (he's even in the same building!). So, Adam, welcome to Australia, mate!

Ok, now let's go to the translation report for the week:

Oooppss.. they might have been rewritten by Adam by accident. Although, note that your actual translations have not been los t only now they show as translated by another person.

I would strongly suggest when more than one person is translating that you coordinate with the other members of your translating team how you go about your work so this overwritten mistakes don't take place. You can use the forums to discuss this if you like.

To avoid this problem we have now a "Translate only missing labels" button, which won't overwrite existing translations but just show you the ones that are missing.

G'day fellow translators,

We have updated LAMS for the week now. We had more than 3000 translations this week with French, Hungarian, Swedish, Chinese and German doing some really good progress. We have also updated the translators server now, so you can have a look.

One thing you will notice is that the Survey tool is shown in Author. It is still in development, so we can't put it up for translation yet, but we aim to have it up for translation in one or two weeks. Scribe (the other missing activity) is on the pipe as well, but it isn't an activity on its own as it is used in conjunction with chat (remember Chat&Scribe from 1.0.x). Hopefully we'll have that ready by next week.

More info on the release will be posted in this Forum shortly as well.

OK, without further due, here's the report for the week:

Fellas,

If everything goes according to plan (cross fingers), we should have a LAMS v2.0 Release Candidate 1 by next week :-) It'll come with a Windows installer, so you'll be able to download and get going straight away.

However, if you want to have your translation to work out of the box in the installer, we need to have *all* translations for your language completed by then as well.

Ok, if you can't make it within a week, don't panic :-). We'll keep updating the installer to bundle new translations as you keep adding them (probably once a week). Also, we'll be testing a Language Pack installer/updater, which in principle will update your language without having to re-install LAMS, etc.

This week we must have added about 80+ labels to the i18n site and there are more to come as we finalize the Scribe and Survey tools and update some others. Chat & Scribe is now available for translation as a module as well.

So plenty to translate! :-)

Thanks,

Ernie

Fellow translators,

We are in the final steps to get LAMS 2.0 Release Candidate 1 out there!

This week as you will have seen in the translations site, there have been significant changes in look and feel for the welcome page and all activity authoring pages. Also we have added the Survey tool to be translated as well.

We have added a new language this week: Russian! Thanks to Anton Vychegzhanin for his work on this.

This week, we have had more than 4400+ translations. We also have added lots of new labels as well, so thanks to everyone for being so responsive on this.

Ok, here's the report for the week:

Oh! One more thing, in the new Welcome page you might see that the Tab size does not accomodate quite well for your language... that'll be fixed, so no worries.

G'day Fellas,

This is the current translation status of all languages as of today:

Norwegian (Norway) 99.89 % Completed
Korean (South Korea)99.89 % Completed
Danish (Denmark)99.89 % Completed
Polish (Poland) 92.59 % Completed
German (Germany)
87.57 % Completed
Arabic (Jordan)85.86 % Completed
Swedish (Sweden) 73.65 % Completed
Greek (Greece)67.80 % Completed
Hungarian (Hungary) 55.59 % Completed
Italian (Italy)50.0 % Completed
Dutch (Belgium) 49.12 % Completed
Portuguese (Brazil)45.60 % Completed
Bulgarian (Bulgaria)34.42 % Completed
Russian (Russia) 31.83 % Completed
Chinese (China)29.29 % Completed
Maori (New Zealand)24.17 % Completed
Thai (Thailand)8.747 % Completed
Welsh (United Kingdom) 6.107 % Completed

Tomorrow for the 2.0 RC1 release, we'll bundle all languages that have all Flash interfaces completely translated (note that LAMS does not work properly -the Flash screens get stuck, if these Flash translations are missing).

So to clarify which ones are the Flash modules, they are:

* LAMS Authoring
* LAMS Monitor
* Learner (Flash)and
* Add Lesson Wizard

Of course, if the your translation is not 100% completed, it means that some parts/module/tools will still show in English, but LAMS still will be functional.

If you can't finish all the modules by tomorrow, no worries, we'll rebundle them in the installer each Friday as we've been doing it before.

Thank you,

Ernie

30: Technical question for Translators!
In response to 1 10/08/06 04:53 PM
[ Reply | Forward ]
Hi Translators,

As you might have seen here, Jong-Dae from Korea has been having problem using LAMS Authoring to draw transitions between activities. For some reason when he presses the transition button (or uses the CTRL Key) the transition pen appears for about a second but then it returns to the normal state (back to the arrow).

When Jong-Dae first shown this to us we thought it could be some problem with his keyboard or mouse but that seems not to be the case. So it might be that this could be with the language settings in the computer (Jong-Dae uses Windows XP in Korean).

Therefore here's the question for all of you guys that might have your operating systems running in different languages:

Have you guys experience a similar problem or limitations when trying to draw transitions in Authoring?

Thanks,

Ernie

Hi Translators,

OK, the translators site has now been updated. Note that we have added quite some new labels this week.

We have repackaged the Windows installer with the latest build. As we said before, this is not an upgrader, so you will need to uninstall your previous version of LAMS (with the uninstaller provided) and reinstall this new version.

NOTE: if you have been designing sequence in your server, make sure you export them before you uninstall/re-install LAMS. Once you reinstall, you can reimport your sequences again.

The feedback we've been getting after the LAMS 2.0 RC1 release has been quite positive but we are eager to hear about any bugs, features you don't like, or functionality you might want to add. If you have something to share, please let us know soon.

34: Scribe Module up for translation
In response to 1 10/16/06 06:05 PM

Hi Translators,

Just to let you know that the Scribe module now is up for translation.

The Scribe module is part of the Chat&Scribe module which is quite a unique syncronous tool. If you haven't use this tool before, it will be a good idea for you to look at this animation on how Chat&Scribe works before you get to translate it. The animation covers the tool in LAMS1.0.x, however, there are only a few improvements in 2.0 but the concept of the tool remains the same.

Thanks,

Ernie

Hi translators,

I've just added a new module "Forum and Scribe" to the website.

This is very similar to Chat and Scribe but instead of having Chat at the top, you have a Forum.

This module has only 3 entries, so once you have translated Scribe, this one should be very easy.

Regards,

Fiona Malikoff

36: English Labels Reviewed
In response to 1 11/01/06 02:13 PM
[ Reply | Forward ]
Hi Translators,

As you might have seen in this posting, some few labels have been updated in English as a result of a review. This review aims to make the language we use in LAMS better at describing what they mean.

Since these labels have changed, some translations might be affected.

So now when you click on a module to translate, you might see the English label starts with "*** UPDATED: ...." and the action column has a button in red that says: "Update Translation".

If you see this, it means that the English translations has been updated *after* you have translated the original English word/phrase.

If you believe the meaning has changed significantly, then I would suggest you consider re-editing your translation as well.

Additionally, in near future, I would like to have another button so you can see all of the re-edited English labels all at once, so that will make the translation easier. So I'll get on my skates on that one and get it done in the next few weeks.

If there's any question, please let me know. Thanks,

Ernie

Hi Fellow translators,

I didn't post the weekly update for the past two weeks as we were busy attempting to release 2.0 stable this week but we couldn't do this :-(

However, it has been quite active in the translators front. This week we have introduce a new LAMS Community feature that will allow you to see if any label has been updated in its original language (English in this case) and you (as a translator) can update your language according to the new meaning. Hopefully this will make it easier for users to understand what features do within LAMS, specially in Author and Learner.

At anyrate, here's the report for this week:

In response to 1 11/08/06 08:16 AM
[ Reply | Forward ]
Hi Everyone,

We have now added LAMS Admin for translation as well. The LAMS admin module is quite a large module which covers:

* All user, course and group management
* Cache Management
* Edit Configuration Settings
* Edit Default Tool Content
* Find Users
* Import Users
* List Disabled Users
* Maintain login page
* Maintain integrated servers
* Register Server

Before you start translating this, I would encourage you to use the translators site, so you get acquainted with the administration screens first. The system admin user and password for this site is: sysadmin/sysadmin.

Thanks,

Ernie

39: Changes to MCQ that affect translations
In response to 1 11/12/06 08:56 PM
[ Reply | Forward ]
Hi there translators,

Just to let you know that we have done some changes to the MCQ tool that will affect some labels as these changes affect the way it behave.

Originally, we intended MCQ to have a multiple correct answers, so if you have a question for instance:

"Which of the following characteristics are true about LAMS?"

and the possible answers were:

[ ] LAMS is about workflow of activities (correct)
[ ] LAMS is written in PHP (incorrect)
[ ] LAMS is open source (correct)
[ ] Blackboard is better than LAMS (incorrect, of course ;-)

Then students would have to select option 1 and 3 to get the credit for this question.

However, the feedback we got from James and some of the educational ladies suggested that we should make one and only one correct answer available instead of many as it seems that not too many people use this type of questions.

So we have done the change accordingly now and modify the labels on the screen accordingly.

In order to avoid confusion, can you please ensure that you revisit the MCQ translations in your language and update the changed labels according to the new meanings please?

Note that the updated labels will show an "*** UPDATED: " sign before the English label as well as a read font button saying "Update Translation". It shouldn't be more than probably 10 entries.

Thanks,

Ernie

Hi Ernie,

The use of MCQ with one or with more correct answers is a feature that is used in a very different manner. Its a cultural difference I think. In germany the Multi-Correct-Answer (MCA) type is more often used than the One-Correct-Answer type.

In the moodle Quiz Module was the same problem. The option there was a decision of the quiz creator, if the question is a MCA or a OCA-Question-Type when starting to create a new question. Moodle creates a difference in the type of bullet points for answering between the types.

Ralf,

I cannot agree more with you about this.

Hopefully we can get this back on shortly in near future.

After 2.0, I hope we do a lot more consulting with the broader community about these changes before they take place.

Hi Translators,

I might have dreamt that I posted a message here telling you that the translators server was updated, but it seems that I didn't. It must be the jetlag from moving from Sydney to Buenos Aires :-)

So, yes, the latest translations from last week are now on the latest code. The most important event regarding translations last week has been the addition of the LAMS Admin module for translation, so that is the last module we needed to add!

Also another thing to notice is that since now I'm in Buenos Aires for the next few months, the updates to the translations servers will occur on Fridays at 1PM Argentina time (GMT +3). So for all of you living in Europe, that's probably in the late afternoon and for some of you fellows in Asia-Pacific, this is about late night/early Saturday morning your time.

Thanks,

Ernie

Dear translators,

The translator's server has now been updated with the latest translations of the week.

I want to highlight the effort of the Vietnamese translators that along with the Italian team have progressed a lot this week. So kudos to all of them!

We just added a new feature to the i18n site. This translator's report shows you the translating progress we've been making.

Also, it makes things forum thread a bit shorter as with every weekly report this page is getting longer and longer.

You can access this feature directly in the i18n site front page.

So, here's the report for last week

Thank you,

Ernie

Hi Translators,

The translator's server has now been updated with the latest from the week.

A few highlights this week: we have added Chinese from Taiwan to our lists of languages. Thanks to Eric Hsin for initiating this work and our 24th language!

Also the Italian and Vietnamese translations are now completed in just a matter of weeks. So congratulations to both translating teams on this.

We'll be releasing LAMS 2.0 (finally!) by Wednesday next week as part of the 1st International LAMS Conference. All languages that have completed their translations 100% for these modules: LAMS Author, LAMS Monitoring, Add Learner Wizard and Learner (Flash) will be included in the installer. (Note that if these are not translated completely some parts of LAMS won't function).

But no worry if you can't make it until then, we'll release language packs that will include all the latest updates to the translations soon after 2.0 is out.

Once again, thanks very much and next week we'll have a good reason to celebrate!! :-)

Dear translators,

As you might know by now LAMS 2.0 is out now. We have included on the installer all the updated translations until Dec 5, 2006.

I have updated now the translators server with the translations up to Dec 11, 2006. Here's the report since last week.

Also, we will be testing the first language pack this week, so we can use it hopefully next week to update all the translations in the future.

Thank you,

Ernie

G'day Translators,

Just updated that translator's site now.

Note that now you will be using LAMS version 2.0.1 which is the next release coming up next. So be aware of small little changes you might encounter. If you want to have a look what the new features/fixes are, have a look at the bug tracker here.

Also we fixed (or are about to actually) a critical problem when LAMS is installed in a non-English OS system but LAMS is set to run in English. Here are all the details for this.

The 1st Language Pack should be coming out next week, so if you want to have your translations included, you might want to add your translations before Thursday next week.

Finally, here's the translator's report for this past week.

Thanks,

Ernie

G'day fellow translators,

We've been testing the language pack for windows and it's looking quite promising for a Friday afternoon release.

So here's the plan, if you can fit as many label translations before Friday 1PM Sydney time, we will include them all in the first LAMS Language Pack by the afternoon (Sydney time as well).

If you can't, no worries... we'll release the second language pack short after (short after the new year).

So one final push before the end of the year and you can have a full LAMS in your language for Christmas!

Thanks,

Dear translators,

Happy New Year! :) I hope y'all have a great year!

We have added the all the translations done from 22/12/2006 until today in the code. Even thru the Christmas and NY celebrations, the fellas from Taiwan have been working hard to get it all translated. Congratulations to all of them. Here's the report for this period.

In other translating related news, Fiona has announced the release of the Non-Windows language pack. If anyone encounters a problem with this or the Windows language pack, please post them in this thread.

In the next few weeks, we'll release a newer version of the language pack.. so stay tuned!

Thanks,

Hi Translators,

We are all back at work now and getting ready for the LAMS 2.0.1 release in about three weeks. As you might have seen in the translator server, there are quite a few new features and bugs fixes in this upcoming release.

Some of the new labels we've been adding in the past few months are already for 2.0.1. If you are not so sure how to translate them, login into the translator's site to find out or post here any questions you might have about them.

Fiona announced last week the release of the second Language Pack. Thanks a lot to all of you once again for working on the translations. :-)

Here's the translations report for this week.

At the beginning of March we are intending to release LAMS 2.0.1. So that will give us with only next Friday (March 2nd) to do all translations for this release.

Note that if you have done all your translations already, we aren't going to add any new ones any time next week. So you are done already :-)

Dear translating fellas,

We are gearing up to release LAMS 2.0.3 by the end of this month :-)

Aside from the bug fixes and small additional features, the new 2.0.3 release will include a new feature called Live Edit. Live Edit includes quite a few new labels that will need to be translated and have now been added to the internationalization site.

However, before you begin translating those, I would ask you to wait for a few more days until we include Live Edit to your translators server.

This is because I believe it would be easier for you to see how this whole feature works in English first so you have better context for your translations.

As soon as we have the Live Edit feature in the translators server I'll let you know.

Thank you,

Ernie

The translators server now has the new feature Live Edit so you can now have a look on how it works and then choose the words for your translations appropriately.

All the words for Live Edit are now in the internationalization site.

You can either login in to the translators server with your language login and then change your language to English to see all the words in English, or you can login with these set of users:

u: test1 p: test1
u: test2 p: test2
u: test3 p: test3

If you have any problems, please let us know.

Dear translators,

Just to remind you that given that we are aiming to release LAMS 2.0.3 in the next two weeks, you might want to have a look at the missing translations words/phrases in the internationalization site.

Most of the new words/phrases added are to cover the new Live Edit feature introduced in 2.0.3.

If you want to play with this new feature, you can use the translators site, as that one is running the latest code.

Thank you,

Ernie

Hi Fellow translators,

We are done with the tasks for 2.0.3 release, so all next week we'll be doing testing aiming to release the installer/upgrader next Friday June 1st.

As mentioned before, there are a few extra new labels added to 2.0.3, so if you want your language to look complete, please take the time before next Thursday night (European time) to update these labels.

So far the list of completed language is looking like this:

Thai (Thailand) 6.966 % Completed
Chinese (China) 23.28 % Completed
Bulgarian (Bulgaria) 26.95 % Completed
Russian (Russia) 27.53 % Completed
Chinese (Taiwan) 34.54 % Completed
Dutch (Belgium) 38.62 % Completed
Hungarian (Hungary) 49.05 % Completed
German (Germany) 72.79 % Completed
Arabic (Jordan) 80.09 % Completed
Welsh (United Kingdom) 96.70 % Completed
Vietnamese (Viet Nam) 97.15 % Completed
Portuguese (Brazil) 97.23 % Completed
Maori (New Zealand) 97.27 % Completed
French (France) 97.27 % Completed
Swedish (Sweden) 97.27 % Completed
Korean (South Korea) 97.27 % Completed
Danish (Denmark) 97.32 % Completed
Italian (Italy) 97.60 % Completed
Polish (Poland) 97.60 % Completed
Norwegian (Norway) 99.95 % Completed
English (Australia) 100.0 % Completed
Spanish (Spain) 100.0 % Completed
Greek (Greece) 100.0 % Completed

As you can tell not too many new labels either, so probably won't take you long.

As always, you can test these labels in the just updated Translator's site.

Thank you and let us know if you need any help.

The translations server also have been updated with your latest contributions.

Since the translations server uses the latest LAMS code, you will be able to have a sneak preview at branching. Once again, it's still heavily in development, but it's getting there.

Thanks very much once again for your help with the translations

Dear translators,

I have updated the Translator's server this weekend as we have had lots of translations activity this past week.

Thanks for the people from HuaZhong Normal University, the simplified Chinese is almost completed. Special thanks to Lily and Wei Guo for their work on this.

Lots of progress with Branching in the past few weeks, so if you want to check that out, please gave a look. Again, it isn't fully finished yet, so you might see some bugs or incomplete parts.

Thanks,

I've just added three new labels - one to Forum and two to Multiple Choice.

One of the choices in branching is tool output based branching. This will allow the author to set up which branch of activities a user does, based on what the user does in a preceeding activity.

To do this, the tools have "tool outputs", and in authoring you get to pick which "tool output" you want to use. So we need a nice little text description for each tool output (e.g. "Learner's number of postings in the forum") so that the author knows what they are picking!

The three new labels that I have added are descriptions for tool conditions:

  • Learner's number of postings in the forum
  • Learner's total mark
  • Learner has all answers correct

These descriptions will appear as a drop down list in the "Create Tool Output Conditions" dialogue box in authoring. Have a look at the attached picture. The drop down list will go where it currently says "undefined (long)".

So at the moment, you won't be able to see the text for these three labels anywhere but as soon as we get a few more bugs sorted out in authoring then you will be able to see them. There will be more descriptions coming in future versions of LAMS, as we add more tool outputs to other tools.

I've made up a temporary page on the wiki which explains what these three new labels mean, and how they are used for branching.

This is just the first step in using LAMS in Sakai, so only Author is available at this point. To get to the Learner and Monitor screens you have to start the lesson.

Go into Author and create a learning design, then save the design and come back to this screen. Click "Refresh Workspace" and the design you created should appear under your name. Select the design and click Next.

Then you will the "Add/Update Item" screen. Here you need to enter a title for the lesson and click the "Add/Update Item" button.

Then you will get a list of all your lessons. If you click on the title of the lesson, it will start Learner. If you click "Monitor" then it will start Monitor. See the attached screenshot.

    Dear translators,

Here's the translation report since the last time we update them (29-Sept). As you can see, lots of translations from our Japanese translator, Mr Taira San. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, we'll have a complete Japanese translation.

We also added Mr. Benjamin Gay as a French translator. Bienvenue Benjamin!

In addition, thanks to all other translators for completing most of the branching labels (Chinese (China), German, Maori, Spanish, English, Japanese, Greek, Norwegian, French)

Next update will be on Friday November 2nd, 2007 1PM Sydney Time. I'll let you know a few days before.

    Thank you,

    Ernie

    Dear translators,

The translators server now has been updated with the latest translations.

As you might have noticed, the LAMS Community was down due to a massive hardware failure. Luckily all data was preserved so we suffer no lost.

Also, LAMS 2.1 is coming out shortly as Beta and then Release Candidate(s). The Beta release will come with an installer that won't upgrade your existing LAMS 2.0.4 but as a standalone installer so you can use it for your testing. Later release candidates will include all appropriate upgrades.

We'll aim to update the translations again in about two weeks. I'm currently in Argentina and getting married tomorrow :-) So we'll update the translations as soon as I get back from the honey moon.

Once again, thanks everyone for their work on the translations!

    Dear translators,

All translations have now been added to the 2.1 Beta release and are included in the installers.

Additionally, the translator's server has been updated as usual.

We are getting closer to the final stable LAMS 2.1 release... the more feedback we get the fastest we'll be able to release it, so if you have a chance have a play with the branching features and have some comments, please let us know in this forum.

Once again, thank you all for such a great work this year! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for all!

    Dear Translators,

The translator's site has been updated with all the translations for the past two weeks. We had almost 3000 translations in this period! Thanks to you all! :-)

In the translation site, you'll find that you can embed video and audio using the new flvPlayer plug-in. I haven't tested in other languages, so if anyone finds a problem, please let us know.

Next translation update will take place in two week: January 25th!

    Thank you!

    Hello Translators,

We have now updated the latest translations you have added in the past two weeks to the LAMS code. Additionally, we also have updated your translator's server.

Just in case you aren't aware yet, there will be a LAMS European/Iberoamerican conference in June in Spain this year. Some of you have mentioned that will be attending so it will be great if we can have a session or round table about the LAMS translations as well. Let me know if any of you is interested in taking part of it.

Thanks very much and the next update will be on Friday February 8th.

81: LAMS Documentation Wiki to be multilanguage
    In response to 1 02/07/08 10:35 PM
    [ Reply | Forward ]
    Dear translators,

As you might notice the LAMS Documentation Wiki, which is the teachers and users documentation for LAMS has always being in English.

Also while using LAMS, you will see that there are buttons that have a ? (question mark) in them that when pressed a new window pops-up pointing to a specific LAMS Documentation page in this Wiki that explains how the LAMS feature/tool you are in works.

But the problem is that for non-English teachers/users, it doesn't quite help to have this documentation in English. So following lots of people request, we have now configure this Wiki (and LAMS) to jump to a specific are where documentation in the same language as the LAMS user uses will be displayed.

For this, we have created new Wiki Spaces that have the same information as the main English Wiki but this pages can be translated to each of the languages used in LAMS.

So for instance, users utilizing LAMS in Spanish whenever they request help, they will be redirected to the LAMS Documentation Wiki in Spanish.

As you can see in the Spanish Wiki (which is not fully translated yet) we have "copied" the English Wiki that will be translated into Spanish overtime.

The main advantage of doing this (additionally to the users get help on their own language) is that since each language can have their independent Wiki space, the editors for each language can decide the best way to structure their help content, provide additional examples, etc.

So far, we have two new spaces for Spanish and Japanese. However, if you are interested to help us translate the help to your own language, we will create a new space for it and give you the basic English "content" structure so you have a head start.

Additionally, we have put instructions on how to use the Wiki for translations that you might find helpful.

Also since this is a wiki, multiple persons can collaboratively work on the same pages without deleting each others' contribution but building on top of each other instead.

You don't need special skills to edit this pages as our Wiki has a very nice and intuitive interface.

So let us know if you want to start the pages in your own language and we'll help you with all that.

Thanks and have a great weekend,

    Ernie

    Hi Translators,

We have now updated the translations server with your latests translations (as of Friday February 15th 2008).

You will notice that the help pages for the translations server now jump directly to the LAMS Documentation wiki in your own language. You can test this by login in and when pressing on the round question mark buttons in any authoring or monitor page, you'll jump to the LAMS Documentation wiki in your language. If the page in your language has not being translated, then it will jump to the LAMS Documentation in English as an alternative.

Also, we are a few bugs from releasing 2.1 Release Candidate 1. So it'll be a good idea to start checking out the branching and optional sequences documentation to learn about the latest.

Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

    Dear Translators,

I have just updated the translator's server with your latest translations.

Also many thanks to Peter Gogh for his work on the Hungarian translation. Hungarian will now be included as a supported language in the 2.1 release! Thanks Peter

Since we are waiting for the boss to do his quality control, we have started adding a few small 2.1+ features into the list of 2.1 final release. Therefore, you might have noticed that we have added a few new labels for them.

Some of these features that require new labels are:

    * Forgotten password (see new labels in LAMS Central)
    * Insert/Merge new sequences in Authoring (See Authoring)
    * Controls for managing the size of the popup windows (see Admin labels)

Forgotten password now is a link in the LAMS login page that allows users to change their password by entering either their username or their email address. If the entered criteria matches, then an email is sent to the person with a link. The user can click on the link and now update his/her password.

Insert/Merge is a really cool feature that allows teachers to import sequences within sequences. So if you had a sequence that has some activities that you really like, now you can import these activities into another sequence you are working on. Here's an animation.

Popup-size windows. In the past some of you have mentioned that the size of the LAMS popup windows (learner, author, monitor, admin, etc) are rather small (800x600 px by default). Now the size of these popups are configurable from the Admin interface.

These features are on addition to the large number of tasks/bugs/improvements we've been working on the past few weeks. One to emphasize is the new display for branching activities that looks very very cool.

Anyway, as we are getting closer to release I will update your translations next Friday April 25th.

Let me know if you have any questions or need any help with anything...

    Thanks,

    Ernie

    84: New Translating Feature!
    In response to 83 04/18/08 01:42 AM
    [ Reply | Forward ]
Today I finally implemented a new translating feature that will make things a lot easier to ensure quality translations across all tools (many things to Spyros Papadakis and Daniel Schneider to suggest this).

When you go to the translation page and you are logged in as a translator, you will see a new feature:

"Search and Translate Labels across modules"

This feature will allow you to search for words/phrases in *all* your language translations across modules.

Practically this means that if you think you are using two different words (for example "student" and "learner") and you want to ensure that you are consistent, this feature will allow you to find these labels and change them accordingly in a bulk translation update.

Of course, you might want to talk to your fellow language translators so that you all use the consistent words/phrases as you won't want to keep overwriting each other's labels :-)

Let me know what you think about this and if you can think of any other ways to improve this.

    Thanks,

    Ernie

    Hey Translators,

Your server has now been updated with the latest labels as of today.

We have added only a few new labels this week in Monitor mainly. These are so teachers can view how the conditions (or groups) are assigned to the branches. You can test this by clicking on a Branching activity in Monitor and then right-click on it and select the option to "View Conditions to Branches".

We have also developed a new Task List tool that will be included in LAMS 2.1! This new Task tool allows the teacher to set a number of task that he/she wants the students to do. You can think of it as a checklist for the students.

It has some cool advanced features, such as the tasks can have hierarchies so future tasks are not displayed until the previous (parent) one is done. Also the teacher can specify required tasks that the student must do to continue with the rest of the sequence.

But the most important is that this tool can also be used in branching, so the teacher can set write "conditions for branching" ie: "if the student did task 2 and 3, then send him to X branch... if he's done 1 and 3, then send him to Y Branch".

You can have a look at the requirements for the Task List tool.

We will add the Talk List tool to the translators site so you can have a play with this tool as well and -of course, we'll add the labels to be translated so you can use it in LAMS 2.1 in your own language.

Remember that next Friday, we'll update your translations again.... so until then, you guys have all a good weekend!

    Thanks,

    Ernie

    Dear translators,

Just to let you know that the latest translations have now been updated in your server.

This week we have added a few labels in several tools. One that is important to mention is the "locked when finished" warning for users. These new labels are to notify or warn users that after the complete this activity, if they come back to it, they won't be able to continue adding stuff to the activity.

So you get a bit of context on where these labels are displayed, here's a picture on how they look like.

The boss has done some quality control last weekend so we have added lots of new fixes and bugs to LAMS 2.1. And there's more to come... but we'll be working on them in the next few weeks.

If you found anything that you want to suggest a fix for or want a new feature added, just post them in the Tech Forum.

    Next update: Friday May 9th!

Thanks and have a great weekend

    Dear translators,

Your server has now been updated.

Additionally, you will be able to play with new Task List tool! We don't have documentation for this tool as yet (only tech documentation) but you can think of this tool as a check list for students.

The labels for this new tools have not been added yet for translations as it will be best for you to have a play with this tool before getting into translations (probably it gives you a better idea on how it works).

Also with Spyros Papakis, we have been talking about a feature in the Q&A tool that assist teachers in formulating good questions to encourage participation and critical thinking in learners.

This new "Questions Wizard" walks you thru the process of asking questions in the context of cognitive skills (Spyros, feel free to add any other comments as well).

I have include the mockup of our work in the Q&A tool. Once you are in authoring and you click on "Create Question", you'll see a "Questions Wizard" option on the right-hand corner. Have a look at it and let us know what you think.

    Thanks,

    Dear Translators,

The translations server has now been updated with the latest.

Final testing is underway so we should expect 2.1 to be out within a week or so. Hopefully before we go to the LAMS 2008 Conference.

Also Erik Engh (Norwegian translator) has suggested and improvement to the translation site, so each translator can see every translation for all modules in one page (very long page!).

Erik says it makes it easier to compare translations across modules in the same page. Erik is also testing this page today, so if it all works, then we'll add it to the site permanently tomorrow.

    Thanks,

    Dear translators,

We have been experiencing some problems with our server in the UK (LAMS Community and others). The email gateway for the LAMS Community was down so you were not getting messages until yesterday. This has now been fixed.

We have updated the translations server to the latest.

The code for LAMS 2.1 is now all ready for release (yes! Finally!) and we are putting together the installers and upgraders! So now we need to make sure that all translations are final.

Additionally, I have added the new translating feature permanently as the options for translation. Once you go to the i18n site, you will see an option that says "All modules translations in one page". It might take a while to load as it's pulling *all* translating labels in one single page. This is page is good if you want to compare the words that you use across different modules. As we mentioned before, with the search and translate feature, you are able to search words in you own language and see how they are translated across modules. With this new feature you can still see all your translations but also compare them to the English version as well.

Moreover, we have included the new Task List tool. You can have a look at the tool in the Translations site. I'll put together some basic information about how it works shortly so you can understand what it is meant be be used for.

    Thank you,

    Ernie

    Dear Translators,

LAMS 2.1 testing and installers are finalized now, so now we are waiting for the final translations to occur.

We would like to release LAMS 2.1 installers with all the translations in it, so we will have until next Wednesday 18th of June to get all you can translate in the installers and upgraders.

So ensure that your translations make it before the deadline if you can. Otherwise, we will release language packs later, but you must realized that it might be a bit annoying to have to install and then apply language packs rather than install it and get all your language there :-)

If you need any help or we can help with the process of translation, please do post here!

    Thank you and happy tranlating!

Thanks for your efforts in the past couple of days. We have not added all your latest translations to the LAMS v2.1 Installers and upgraders. They should be up on the Wiki as soon as the announcement is done in this forum.

Once again, thanks very much for your work on this and we hope you enjoy LAMS 2.1 in your own language!

As usual, Internationalization site will be available for translations for all languages and we will update the translations site every two week. The next update will take place on Friday July 4th, 2008.

If by then there's a need, we will look into have a language pack with the most updated labels for 2.1.

Ok, after over 11 years of speaking/writing English every day (add about 15 years before learning it at school), I still can't either speak it or write it properly :-)

On my previews message, where it reads "We have not added all your latest translations to LAMSv2.1"... it should read instead:

"We have NOW added all your latest translations to LAMSv2.1"

My apologize for my poor English and thanks to Fiona for pointing this out.

As we have now incorporated a new language: Turkish, I have rebuilt the translations server. Many thanks to Gonca Kızılkaya for this efforts in this translation :-)

Additionally, since the release of LAMS 2.1 and the LAMS Conference in Spain, there has been new developments in LAMS tools that you will be able to test in the translations server, specially with two new tools:

    1.- Google Maps tool

This tool allows teachers to use Google maps in there sequences. Teachers are able to show maps to students and get the students to contribute markers (little flags on top of the maps) and stories for each of these markers. I'm sure you can imagine a lot of good pedagogical uses for this, like field excursions, teaching geography, arts, etc, etc. Or even asking students where they go on holidays :-)

    2.- Online Spreadsheet

This one is an online spreadsheet that can be used in two ways:

A- The teacher can present a formula for the students to play with (Say for instance the effect of interest rates in mortgages)

B- The teacher can give the students a problem and want the students to submit the resolutions in formulas by using the spreadsheet.

We use an open source javascript spreadsheet that is getting better everyday but would like to hear your comments on usability.

We'll see what you think about this before we add these tool as part of the LAMS installer or we should leave them as optional tools to install only if you want.

Anyway, have a play and let us know what you think.

    Have a great weekend,

    Ernie

    Dear translators,

We'll be updating the LAMS dictionary in the next upcoming LAMS 2.1.1 release, due on Friday September 5th. So this would be a chance to update the translations for your language.

For 2.1.1, we'll release an upgrader with the latest translations up to Aug 5th. The translators server has been updated with the latest labels if you want to check them out.

LAMS 2.1.1 fixes a problem with Chat and Firefox 3. So it would be important to upgrade.

    New labels added

You will see now that there are a few (5 in average) new labels for all tools. These labels are:

    label nameEnglish
    label.onOn
    label.offOff
    monitor.summary.th.advancedSettings Advanced Settings
monitor.summary.td.addNotebookAdd Notebook at the end of Forum
    monitor.summary.td.notebookInstructionsNotebook instructions

These labels now show in the Monitor page for each tool, and they tell you the advanced options the author set at authoring time. So it will show you something like:

    Advanced Settings

    • Add Notebook at the end of Forum: On
    • Setting XYZ: Off
    • Blah blah: On
    New Tool: Data Collection

Also, you will see an new tool: Data Collection tool. This tool allows teachers to set up a "database" so the students can add records into it.

The typical use case is say a teacher that once the students to enter records of everything they have collected in a school trip. So the teacher can set up a database that includes a name (text field), description (text area), number (numeric value), position (latitude, longitude), picture (file upload), date (date field), etc...

So when the students get to this activity, then they can add records to this database with the objects/stuff they have found.

We'll add a new Wiki page for this tool explaining all its functionality shortly.

    Thanks,

    Ernie

    Dear translators,

As mentioned last week, we'll be releasing an upgrader for 2.1 to 2.1.1, which included an important fix for the Chat tool in Firefox 3.x this Friday, September 5th (Australian Time).

In this upgrader, we will also include new translations you can do until Friday morning. So please try to do all the changes and additions until then, so we can include all them in!

Also here's documentation for the new Data Collection Tool. This tool will be included in the 2.2 release.

You can test and play with this tool in the translator's server.

    Thank you,

The translators website has also been updated.

In this LAMS 2.1.1 release we have now included Turkish as a language. Many thanks to Gonca Kızılkaya for his work on this!

Once again, thanks very much to all of you for your translating efforts and the next update will be on October 3rd, 2008.

    Dear translators,

We have now added all your latest translations in to the translations server.

There are three new tools that we have added to the internationalization site:

    * Data collection
    * Google Maps
    * Online Spreadsheet

Also, we have included a new tool called Dimdim, which is an integration tool that allows to use the Dimdim conferencing (desktop sharing) application within LAMS! Jeremy has created an animation explaining how it works.

So give it a go and let us know what you think!

The next update for translations will be on November 7th.

    Thank you!

    Hola Translators,

Just to let you know that today we have added a whole bunch of new labels to the i18n site.

These new labels I have added are for "Text search conditions" for Q&A, Forum, Survey, Chat and Notebook.

So for all these tools you now are able to create complex text based conditions. For example: If the student in Questions # 2 said the word "blue whale" and didn't said "elephant" then you can create a condition and use this condition for branching.

You will find that a lot of these labels are the same across all tools, so try to be consistent as it will make it easier for teachers.

Here are the latest labels added so you can compare them and see the similarities.

Also to remind you that next big update will take place on November 7th.

    Thanks,

    Ernie

    Dear translators,

Your server is now upgraded to the latest translations as of today.

There are a good bunch of new labels in almost every project. So please check out your translations for completion.

Given that we are releasing LAMS 2.2 in just about a bit less than a month, we'll keep updating the translations every Friday until December 5th. So you can get a chance to update, test and complete the missing labels.

If you have any questions about any of these labels, please let me know.

Additionally, I would like to welcome Laurence Vignolette as French translator! Thanks Laurence

    Thank you very much!

    Dear translators,

Just a friendly reminder, we'll be updating all languages on Friday (Nov 14th).

If you can't complete all your labels, there will be a further two updates on Wednesday Nov 19 and then on Saturday Nov 22nd.

So far, everything seems to be OK for a release on schedule (December 5th for the Sydney LAMS Conference).

From Monday Nov 24th until Friday 28th, I'll be updating your labels daily in case you need to make final adjustments. The final update to include in LAMS 2.2 will take place on Monday December 1st. On this date, we'll be updating the latest labels and adding them to the installer/upgraders.

So please take this timing into account for planning your translations.

    Thanks,

    Dear Translators,

The translations server has now been updated with all the latest translations.

We had a functional test for LAMS 2.2 yesterday for 5 hours straight with 10 people in the team and we were happy to find that no significant bug or issue was found. So it seems that the LAMS 2.2 is still on schedule for release on December 5th.

As for your translations, there will be again updates on Wednesday Nov 19 and then on Saturday Nov 22nd. The following week (Monday Nov 24th until Friday 28th), we'll do daily updates in case you want to check any issues or problems.

Once again, the last day for updating your translations before release will be December 1st. So please be aware of these date.

Thanks very much and speak to you soon,

    Hey Translators,

I just realized that the Wiki tool wasn't up for translation, so I have not included in the internationalization site. You can test the wiki tool in the translator's site. In addition, the Wiki documentation is available as well.

There's a new feature in the Translations across feature that will make translations easier. You can search labels across all modules in your native language or English. Before you could only search in your native language, but as Spyros has pointed out at times it is easier to find this in English.

Click on the link in the "Search and Translate Labels across module" in the internationalization site and give it a go for yourself!

If you encounter any problems, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Dear translators,

The translator's server is now up to date with the latest translations.

In addition to the normal tools, this time I have added two tools:

    * Dimdim tool
    * Image Gallery tool

The Dimdim tool is an integration tool with Dimdim, a web conferencing facility that allows you to do online collaborative whiteboards, share desktop, video and voice. Before you use this though, I will suggest you to read the instructions on how the Dimdim tool works (see tutorial).

The Image Gallery tool is a new tool that we will add in the near future (post 2.2) that allows a teacher to share images with students. Students can rate, select favorites and comment on pictures as well as sharing their own (if allowed by the teacher).

If you have any comments on any of these tools, please don't hesitate to share it with us.

The next update will take place on Tuesday Nov 25th instead of Monday. My apologies for this but I'll be flight back to Sydney on Monday.

Thanks very much and have a great weekend!

    Hi Spyros,

    Good catch!

The LAMS Help tab won't change though because that is a setting in the configuration settings that allows you to add an extra tab on the main page that can link to anything you like. In this case, I have added one to link to Help, but in the case of a school/university it can go to their main uni page or so.

For the "My Profile" tab, see (attached picture) that on the latest translations to greek on LAMS Central, it still reads the old label (I think?)

    Thanks,

    Hi Translators,

We have now updated all the labels that will go into the LAMS 2.2 release.

If you have missed a few labels and given that the packaging will start tomorrow morning (Sydney time), we might be able to add any extra one then. So if you need/want to change something, you have a few extra hours but after that, your labels would not be added.

The latest labels can be checked in the translations site.

The installers and upgraders for LAMS 2.2 will be available on Friday for the 3rd International LAMS conference. All the features have been tested and the installers and upgraders are being tested as well, so it's just a matter of days.

We will also upgrade the demo servers so you would be able to use them as well.

Once again, a BIG thank you for all your hard work! I'll post here again before the release once more.

    Enjoy!

    Hi Translators,

I hope you have started a wonderful New Year! :-)

The translator's server is now updated with your latests translations. Kudos for the Maori and Turkish translators as they have been the most active during the holiday season :-)

Apart from the usual things, you will also find a new tool... it's called Pixlr.

Pixlr is a powerful online flash-based image editor that can be included as a LAMS activity. The editor has powerful image creation and editing features, and the interface will be familiar to anyone who has used Paint, or more advanced editors like Photoshop or GIMP.

Jeremy has created the documentation page as well as an animation for it:

    http://wiki.lamsfoundation.org/x/R4CI

As you can see there, Pixlr is a tool that lives in the Internet and it is not "bundled" with LAMS... but it has a powerful API that allows us to treat it as a normal LAMS tool.

I'm looking forward to hear what you have to say...

    Thanks,

    ernie

    Dear Translators,

The translations server has now been updated with the latest labels you have translated over the past month.

As the translations server shows the latest developments in LAMS, you can have a sneak preview into a whole bunch of cool new things:

    * Pedagogical planner (not yet finished, but you can get a sense of how it will work now - specially the simplified authoring editor)
    * New equation editor in all HTML editors (for all activities!)
    * Google maps for all activities (also as part of the HTML editors
    * Enhance communicationadding your skype status in all LAMS Activities.
    * Pixlr tool... the excellent drawing online tool is now finished and ready to be used.
    * Image gallery is also ready to go.

and a whole bunch of fixes and improvements...

In addition, the Pixlr and Image Gallery tools can now be translated. No rush on this translation but you can start anytime.

Thanks and any comments and/or question on any of the new features, please don't hesitate to let me know. Have a wonderful weekend!

    Hi Translators,

The translator's server is now update with the latest labels.

There's a bucket of new features included now... but let me see if I can give you a list of the most important ones:

    Improved Layout

For a long time, LAMS has been constricted to very very narrow windows (800x600 resolution) now you will be able to see that we take advantage of space a lot better with stretchable screens so you can have more room for images, text and content in general. That goes for the main course page as well as all author and monitor pages.

    Video Recording tool coming shortly

The video recording tool is coming along very very nicely. I have added it to the translator's server but haven't managed to get a streaming server installed, so you will be able to see the video example I put in there, but not to record your own yet (give me a week to get some server space).

Please check out the lesson called "Video Recording Test" that I created with the Video Recording plugin and leave comments on how it works for you.

    Pixlr is now finished!

Thanks for your feedback on the pixlr tool. All of it has now been added to the Pixlr tool that works incredibly nicely. (Also our thanks to Ola Sevandersson for his awesome work on Pixlr).

A preview on the upcoming Assessment tool

For a long long time we've been longing for a better assessment tool in LAMS (at the moment MCQ is just to basic). So we embarked in creating a whole new powerful assessment tool based on these requirements. The Authoring parts of it are now working, so you can play with them and let us know what you think.

    Pedagogical planner is almost done!

The Pedagogical Planner will be a really new twist to LAMS. Instead of starting from a blank Authoring page, the Planner will assist you in creating quick and educationally sound designs that you can do in a matter of minutes. James and Leanne have been creating the initial steps and in the next month we should be able to show you some examples.

Import sequences in LAMS directly from the LAMS Community

We are about to finish a new feature that directly from your LAMS server, you'll be able to browse/search all the available sequences in the LAMS Community and once you select one that you like, add it to your LAMS server by pressing a button. This is all finished on the LAMS side, we are just waiting for me to get a chance to do "hooks" on the LAMS Community -so we should be done shortly.

    Public Folder

Now you can share sequences with all the authors system-wide. Just drop your sequence into the Public Folder and everyone can get access to it. Note that this is a *real* public folder, therefore others can modify your sequence.. so keep a copy on your own folder if you don't want your sequence to be changed/modified/deleted.

    Math Formulae

I think I mentioned this before, but you can use any math formulae in LAMS now... see the Fx button in the online HTML editors.

Regarding the translations, many thanks to Horng-Ji Lai that has been working really hard on the Chinese (Taiwan) translations. Same for Robin Ohia> (Maori) and a two new translators:

    * Ruslan Kazakov (Russian)
    * Leffe Eriksson

The next update is label update will be on March 13th. But I'll update the server so you can play with the video recorder and the assessment tool.

Many thanks and keep up the awesome work!

    uh! I forgot one thing...

Upload any video/audio file into a LAMS activity

When we introduced last year an option for FLV videos into LAMS, that was good but some of your comments have been that only having the option to use one type of video files (FLV: Flash video) is very restrictive.

Sp included in the translations server you will find a new feature in the FCKEditor that allows you to upload video and audio files of the following formats:

    • .avi Audio Video Interleave
    • .flv Flash Video
    • .mov Quicktime Movie
    • .mp3 Audio
    • .mp4 MPEG-4
    • .mpv iPod video file
    • .wma Windows Media Audio
    • .wmv Windows Media Video
    • Youtube URLs

here are instructions on how to use this:

    http://wiki.lamsfoundation.org/display/lamsdocs/fckEditor+Media+Player

Play with it and if you have any comments, just post it on the forums.

    Thanks,

    Ernie

    PS: does anyone use realplayer?

    Hi Translators!!

Great news: now you can check out the new VideoRecording tool as well as the VideoRecording Plugin!

The VideoRecording Plugin allows you to record video in any LAMS activity... so instead of typing your instructions for example, you can just video-record them :-)

Additionally, the Video Recording Tool is a full LAMS Activity that allows you to create video-forum discussions in a YouTube-like style. It's quite wicked...

I have updated your server so you can have a look.

Check out the two lesson I created in there and if you have a spare webcam around, record some video introducing yourselves! Finally, we'll be meeting in in cyberspace! :-)

If you have any problems or comments, please post them here.

Thanks and enjoy the full media LAMS!!

    Dear translators,

The translator's server has now being updated with all the latest.

    Some cool exciting stuff:

    Time graphs and charts

Ever wanted to see how much time each student spent in each activity? Well, we have now introduced a completely cool new way to add the time dimension into LAMS Monitoring. The new time graphs and charts will give you precise information about the amount of time your students are taking in a lesson.

    Assessment tool is almost complete

The new assessment tool is 80% completed. You can now create tests and then run them with learners, but we are still working in the monitoring views. We should be completed by the next internationalization update.

    Video Recording tool

The new video recording tool has been tested and new improvements have been added... you can test it directly in your server. That's in addition to the HTML online editor video recording plugin.

We also tested the video recording in tiny little devices like the OLPC XO and the Intel Classmates (1st and 2nd generation) and they work great!

More things to come by the next update:

    Gradebook

A simple yet fully functional gradebook that will let you see all the marks that your students get in their lessons

    Instant messaging

The coolest instant messaging that will allow teachers and students to communicate with each other whenever they are online.

And hopefully a whole lot more... The next upgrade will be on April 3rd!

Ok, I gotta run home now. Thanks and enjoy the weekend!

    Hi Translators,

Your server is now up and running with the latest updated labels.

As you might have seen, we have brought forward the release of LAMS v2.3!

There are a whole pack of features in version 2.3... all the latest is in your server and you can test it now.

Apart from the tools you've been playing with there are two important new things:

    * A simplified Wizard to add lessons
    * A new mindmaping tool

The Wizard for adding lessons is a new interface that now works as part of the Monitor module (you will see that I added a whole bunch of labels to Monitor and removed the old "Add Lesson Wizard"). Give it a go.. you can create lessons with just two clicks (and we'll reduce this to two! -if we can shortly).

Sorry we don't have a wiki page for the mindmap tool yet... it's just today fresh out of the oven, so it might have some bugs in browsers that we haven't tested.

Ooppss... forgot to mention that the next update will be on April 10th followed by April 17th. After that we'll do quicker updates before the v2.3 release just as we did with previous releases.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

    Hi Translators,

Just to let you know that we have added a new module to the internationalization site: Gradebook.

Finally, LAMS gets a gradebook where you can track the progress from learners in a single page, put marks and view times taken in each activity for each user.

Unfortunately, we don't have a wiki page for it yet, but you can test this already in your server (which I just updated today again).

Any comments suggestions on gradebook, as usual, very much welcome!

    Thanks,

    Dear translators,

Just a quick reminder, I'll be upgrading the translations tomorrow Wednesday (Thursday morning for me here in Australia)... so please have a look as there are a few new labels.

On Thursday after the upgrade, I'll be adding two new tools for translations: Mindmap (documentation coming soon) and Assessment. Both of these tools you can play with in your server.

    Thanks,

    Ernie

    Hi Translators,

The update for the translations has taken place now.

However, I'm very sorry to say that today (Thursday), the translator's server will incomplete. Only the four tools will show -all the new ones though: Assessment, Mindmap, Pixlr and VideoRecorder

Unfortunately, we were doing some development today and we managed to change something accidentally that prevents the other tools to get created. We will fix this first thing in the morning tomorrow.

Very sorry about this. I'll let you know tomorrow morning as soon as this is fixed.

    Thanks for your patience.

    Dear translators,

The problem from yesterday has been fixed now. So all tools are displaying properly.

In this update, you can see quite a few cool things:

    1.- The Gradebook
2.- Mindmap tool (now it hs zoom controls)
3.- Video Recorder (try export portfolio)
4.- Assessment (if you have a test that you always do, give t a go and see how you can do it with this new tool)

Any feedback, as usual is welcome.

Next update to be completed on Monday!

    Thanks,

    Ernie

    Dear Translators,

The translations server has now been updated with the latest labels.

Some really cool things these week:

    * Drawing board: a new plugin for the FCKeditor that will allow you to paint/draw/sketch anything you like in all activities!
    * Gradebook should be pretty much finished. Have a look at its documentation for further information
    * Try Instant Messaging. It is just very very cool :-)

As usual, you can do and undo as much as you like and tell us what you think.

We are now heading for a final release probably in two weeks as we are doing some really really heavy testing in a lot more platforms, documenting all installation processes and doing functional testing in each of them... This is a *lot* of work as you can see, but all for getting a very solid and robust release :-)

LAMS 2.3 has a *lot* to test so if you want to give us a hand, use the translations test site and go thru this testing list.

Once again, thanks for your work and hopefully we get 2.3 out in two weeks! :-)

    Dear translators,

We will be updating your server with the latest labels on Wednesday night (Europe time).

In addition, we have now added all the labels for the new Assessment tool. This is an awesome tool if you want to create tests in LAMS. Also it can be use for branching to create really powerful adaptive sequences.

One more to come shortly: Mindmap.

    Thanks,

    Hi Translators,

The translations server has been updated with the latest. Additionally *all* 5 new tools for LAMS 2.3 are now available for translations. They are:

    * Video Audio Recording
    * Pixlr Tool
    * Image gallery
    * New Assessment tool
    * Mindmap tool

We are doing some really heaving testing in a massive range of platforms and we are hoping to get a release in the next two weeks. So ensure that your translations are up to date as in about two weeks we will have to release the upgrader/installer and it will be best for you to have your translations included on it.

Next update will take place on Wednesday (Thursday morning for me here in Australia).

    Thanks,

    Hi Translators,

OK, we have a delivery day for LAMS 2.3:

    May 22nd, 2009

If everything goes according to plan, then we will release LAMS 2.3 in a week and a half! :)

That means that you need to get your translations before then.

From today onwards, I'll be upgrading your server every day so make sure you add as many labels and do tests as soon as you can.

You can check out the LAMS - LAMS Community integration (see the "Community" tab as soon as you login). If you want to import sequences directly from the LAMS Community, go to Author --> File --> Import from LAMS Community and just follow the instructions.

if you have any problems, please let me know.

    Dear translators,

It's been a while since the last update (end of April). Since we've been working on a number of new improvements, we will have another update by August 28th, 2009. That's two weeks and a half from today.

So if you have a chance, have a look at the new labels and update any existing ones. In the next day or two I'll be updating the translations server with the latest code, so you can have a look at any differences.

    [ Reply | Forward ]
    Dear translators,

The latest translated labels have now been added to the code and the translations server has been updated.

We are working on a really interesting feature that you will be able to play with, see the "Inputs and Outputs" lesson I have added there....

For a long time, we've been talking about getting tools to share their content with each other. The most typical case would be for a Q&A to share the responses it gets with a Voting tool... The main pedagogical idea here can be to ask the students a question and use their answer in a voting activity. So for instance in the Q&A you can ask the students: "What's your favorite color?". And then their responses will be voting candidates/options they can vote for in the following Voting tool.

So in the "Input and Output" sequence you can see lots and lots of activities being input for the following Voting activity.

For instance, in the Image gallery tool, the students can upload a picture and then in the following activity, they get to see the pictures and vote for their favorites.

But same goes for forum (the text enter by each student), chat, Pixlr (each image for each student), share resources, notebook, submit files.. so each of the contributions in these activities, become the input for the voting tool.

    Very cool, hey? :-)

Now, as you can see, we only have managed to do the runtime for it... we need to change authoring so teachers can draw "data transitions" between these activities and exchange the data... we'll get there though and then you can create your own dataflows.

Let us know what you think when you have a chance.

    Thank you,

    Ernie

Decided to be a bit more serious about the french translation since no one else wants to do it and since I decided that LAMS is the only LD thing that actually works :)

Thanks to the translation sever and the improved interface for searching (thanks !!!) I was able to get an almost acceptable french version done, but by that I just mean "usable" and not "perfect" ....

Anyhow, here is some first input after going quickly through all the tools in the translation server:

    *** Bug ???

Q&A - after hitting the the Next button nothing happens in the Preview mode on the translation server. If this is true for a student user, this is a serious bug.

    *** Missing labels:

    - all of DIMDIM
    - some default entries in several tools (e.g. in the resource, forum, survey). E.g. for LAMS 2.4 you might want to include labels for example entries.

    *** Suggestions:

    - Increase the size of the noticeboard editing window a bit (maybe 5 lines ?). I know that there is full screen button, but not always handy.

*** Questions about marks (lots of cultural issues involved too)

    - Is a mark always a score or can it be like a grade ? (I decided to use "scores" for MCQ's and Q/A) and grades for the others, but I am not too happy with this. Anyhow, you should know that in some countries double or triple scales like in the US are rarely used (see next item).

    - Marks (e.g. for the forum) are anglo-centric. E.g. in Germany or Switzerland you could get a grade like 5.5 or 1.5. There is IMHO no need to require integers. Also, how are go dealing with Americans. Those guys are used to a double system i.e a 50 to 100 scale that translates into letter grades. But typically students want to see letter grades (I believe).

    *** English language version suggestions:

    - Expand a bit the long description of the English original that shows in the top left panel of the author tool ?? E.g. the resource tool also allows to display IMS CPs, For some folks the "display" aspect is as important as the "sharing" one.

    - Some tooltips could be more obivous. E.g. "Enables editing of nomination" should be replaced by "Edit nomination" (Else lazy translators will go "activate editing of ...".

    - For translators it would be better to use articles or adjectives. E.g. instead of "Create question" which could mean "Create a question" or "Create the question" you might use "Create new question".

*** Remarks regarding the french translation:

To make the french translation a bit more understandable I did change the meaning of some words. E.g. I din't translate "Gate" to "Door" (porte) but to "Lock" (verrou). Backtranslated a verrou is also a constriction. After all the icon is a "stop". I also made the noticeboard into "content" (contenu) since instructions/announcements can be made in any tool... Scribe became "report" etc. etc.

    > Q&A - after hitting the the Next button nothing happens in the Preview mode on the translation server. If this is true

I can confirm this is happening. There's a new bug report for it:

    http://bugs.lamsfoundation.org/browse/LDEV-2459

    > - all of DIMDIM

Yes, Dimdim labels aren't up for translations though. We'll add them after this release though.

    > - some default entries in several tools (e.g. in the resource, forum, survey). E.g. for LAMS 2.4 you might want to
    > include labels for example entries.

Can you send me a screenshot? I have checked the commits and they should all be committed though. We'll update the translations again on Friday though.

I'll address the rest of your points tomorrow. Sorry, struggling with multitasking now :-)

Ok I will try to make an inventory of not translated labels. No urgency. This can wait for LAMS 2.4 :)

There is no urgency either regarding all my other comments. I also post these rather with target LAMS 2.4. in mind.

I even suggest an extra deliverable for LAMS 2.4: "Surface Usability", e.g. be able to use/find tools with a minimum of reading manuals. Most of LAMS is fairly intuitive, but some tools/parts of tools are less.

    Addendum: regarding output conditions.

Shouldn't the English label "Create Output Conditions" in the popup window of the gate and branching tool rather be "Select Output Conditions for Input" or "Retrieve output conditions for input" or something like this ?

Conditions are created within tools as a kind of tool output and then used as input filters for branching or other. (Took me 10 minutes to figure this one out ...)

Also for LAMS 2.4 you might consider adding a help icon in the properties panel.

We are doing some very interesting work on evaluations with our colleagues from Universidad de Cadiz in Spain as part of the implementation of Evalcomix project. Here's a paper on Evalcomix http://is.gd/4VUpZ and as soon as we can we'll show you a demo on how this works. But in short, this would allow teachers to create rubrics, scales and any type of assessment/evaluation instrument and use in to any LAMS activity.

As far as your suggestions on English and French translations: yes to all! Hopefully we can work together to improve the way we do translations as suggested on my email.

Excellent idea. Btw "grading rubrics" are the main thing that is better in Blackboard/Web CT (BB). It's really simple: A table with configurable criteria lines and performance columns :)

I attached a screendump of the tool so that people not familiar with BB can get an idea. (Btw be careful of not reproducing something that looks like this without talking to a lawyer first. BB is fairly aggressive. E.g. in the US they managed to copyright the 2500 year-old idea that actors can be both students and monitors...)

The paper in the link goes beyond just rubrics. I really like the idea of having students participate in the process ! That would be a really cool invention/addition.

    Daniel,

Evalcomix is really powerful stuff. Once fully implemented a teacher can:

    * Create evaluation instruments (rubrics, lists, grading scales, etc)
    * Select one of these instruments for each activity in the sequence
    * At monitor time, the monitor user can use the selected instrument to do the evaluation

Also, teachers in Author will be able to select whether he/she wants the students to use an instrument to evaluate each other work as well.

We are finalizing the first stage now, so we'll be able to show more on this after 2.3.3.

    Thanks,

    Thanx :)

It's good looking at these labels for real, but also a bit challenging. Translating also implies rephrasing sometimes or shortening down (when the target is a verbose language).

I'll spend a day or two on usability and consistency and also show the most mission critical labels to some co-workers... I.e. I will have to rename most tools since they don't fit into the reserved spaces. Some are ambiguous.

Then there is the issue of local variants. When (not if) LAMS will take off in remote parts of the world like France or Canada there might be a need to split into fr_CH, fr_FR, fr_CA etc. But that's future talk. For the moment I'll focus on being short, clear and consistent :)

    Dear translating fellows,

Happy New Year! I hope you all started it with a big blast! (like we did here in Sydney ;-)

I have updated the translator's server yesterday with your latest labels. So if you want to test your translations please do it straight away.

We also want to welcome Ivan Jovan as Slovenian translator! Welcome Ivan and if there's any problems, please don't hesitate to post your questions in this forum.

Also, I would like to remind you that there's a thread where we are gathering feedback for a new LAMS Author interface for LAMS 2.4 here: http://is.gd/5LdSk Given that you guys are advance LAMS users, it would be great to have your suggestions or comments.

We've been discussing different views for LAMS Author and here's a presentation that James Dalziel did about it last year... see the different options we are proposing.

Thanks very much and all the best for this NY!

    Hi Translators,

The translator's server has the latest LAMS 2.3.4 with all your translations for the past few weeks.

We'll be releasing it (most likely) next week after some good testing.

If you encounter any problems, please let us know.

    Thank you,

    Ernie

    I had changed the
Wiki - Activity title to "Ιστότ. Wiki" one week ago.
(I see it correct at the
    http://lamscommunity.org/i18n/translations-across)

    But
Wiki - Activity title remain "Wiki"

I would like also to change the Dimdim Activity title to "Συγχρ. Τηλεδ.Dimdim" but I can not find with Search labels in Greek Labels.

    Hi Spyros,

Are you sure this is the case, I just tested on the translation server and was able to change activity title in flash author, as well as the title in the wiki tool tool author... or have I misunderstood you?

    Unknown toolbar item "googlemaps"
    Unknown toolbar item "Equation"
    Unknown toolbar item "Paint_Button"

    Hi Spyros, Edoardo,

    Thanks for catching this.

It took me 2 hours to figure this one out! It ended up being a really silly thing! I had included and extra / in the Server URL and the online HTML was having problems with that. It should be all fixed now.

    Thanks,

    Ernie

Dimdim has not being added yet to be translated. However, I'll send you a file that you can translated and we can add it to the code instead.

    Thanks,

186: Two new labels added in Assessment (translate before 2.3.4 is out!)

    Dear translators,

We've just resolved one of the last tasks for LAMS 2.3.4 and as a result, two new labels:

label.authoring.advance.allow.students.right.answers =Allow students to see right answers
label.authoring.advance.allow.students.wrong.answers =Allow students to see wrong answers

The main purpose for this task is that students might right down the right or wrong answers and then give them to their peers... (not that I have ever done that! :-) Here's more info on this:

    http://bugs.lamsfoundation.org/browse/LDEV-2516

If you can translate this last two labels before next Wednesday March 3th, then they'll be added into translations for LAMS 2.3.4

    Thank you,

    Ernie
